Try and bring that much booze into Washington State and the Liquor Control Board will confiscate it.

Liquor prices in this State are the highest in the nation, due solely to taxes.

In spite of an initiative to get the State out of liquor sales, the net result has been even higher prices. Oregon and Idaho liquor sales have skyrocketed, and Washington liquor sales are way off, essentially undercutting Washington's tax revenue.

I believe the recent legalization of marijuana in this state was due, in part, to the ridiculous tax structure on alcohol.

Of course, you can't yet legally buy pot, grow pot, sell pot. You can use it in the privacy of your own home, but can't legally acquire it yet.

Of course, legislation has been introduced to sell licenses to grow pot legally for $250,000, attempting to alter the original legislation which has very low license fees. The legislator proposing this just doesn't get it. Government believes that the citizenry is a never ending source of revenue, and that they can impose any tax rate on any product.

The well established underground pot production, distribution and sales infrastructure, while illegal, is much more efficient than anything the State will come up with, so it will continue to thrive until undercut by a well organized and economically run State bureaucracy.
