I'll bet there are only 2 of the people featured here who are (or would be) amused by this- Bush and Obama. Can't picture the others able to see the humor at all!

The comment thread on that post is certainly interesting. Living here, we watched the whole thing from start to (now- maybe it's not finished yet). These weapons showed up AFTER the demonstrators were brutally attacked. And really, when you look at what the other side was armed (including rifles with live ammunition and water cannons that were used on the protesters in below zero (F) temps) with, these weapons seem pathetically inadequate.

I don't know- given the wind and the fact that that's the ocean, I think I wouldn't be playing around in that stuff like those folks in the video.

;) There were lots of them. There are still quite a few in some parts of the country but obviously, there are far fewer. Many Ukrainians see this as trying to once and for all shake off the hold of the Communists (the party is alive and well here too) and the Russians.
My students and I came up with a list of new words that have emerged these last 3 months- quite a few actually. This one is my favorite! Thanks for the post!

Not really- I live in Ternopil- a city SW of Kyiv. I was in Kyiv after it got violent but stayed out of the center of town. Our city government (and probably 95% of the pop here) is composed of people who are in one of the opposition parties (well- they're not the opposition now in the new coalition government) so there never was much danger here as there was no dissent, to speak of. All rallies here (while huge) were peaceful. Right up until last Wed night when the police headquarters, prosecutor's office were torched and generally destroyed. Lots of damage done then but I stayed inside.
Roads are still controlled by the self defense league who protected the demonstrators for months- we came through a checkpoint last night in a bus. That was a bit unsettling (although the young man who got on our bus to look us over was very quiet and polite). They do this to help keep the traffic police in line and to try to snag any of the former government still in the country- there's a long list of 'wanteds'.
Guess the comment got long!
