I can tolerate a kid who's crying as long as it really does seem like he's scared/sick/whatever... but when that kid begins to come across as simply a brat- parents give in to him all the time therefore scream and cry because it works, that's when it gets hard. I'm with the airline on this... I think they handled it well. For one thing, once the kid was that upset, who knows how long it would have lasted AND the mom must have been a wreck at that point, too. Giving them both time (and space) to cool down and start over sounds like a reasonable alternative.
Ditto Mr Bigglesworth. I worked retail one holiday season- it was truly interesting. But I'm all for adults acting like adults and being responsible for their own actions.
The unions are choking out employers these days. I agree- what they did at the beginning was desperately needed; the demands they make now are ridiculous. Too bad.
fyi dutchboy- I think we need to be able to figure out the difference between things like the Y2K hype and the real stuff- AIDS, Sars, flu epidemics- those aren't 'the sky is falling' stuff- they're real.
I'm just watching the trend for now... There doesn't seem to be much doubt that there is a trend. Whether it turns out to be permanent or just a trend- hard to tell. On the other hand, I find it completely impossible to believe that- given the world's population and energy consumption and our consumer habits- hard to believe we are not impacting our environment. I have a lot of friends who like to go around making smart remarks like 'Oooo- all this early snow and the cold fall- that's global warming for you.' Somehow- I think it makes them look less educated and I'm getting a bit tired of it.
umm- thanks- looks like I've wanted to say that for awhile! ;) (In the interest of continuing friendship, I haven't...)

A friend of mine often writes on a notecard that she's illustrated with a pen and ink (sometimes watercolor) sketch... I save them!

And her post is freakier than yours
