Ted's Comments

Wow, the hate on this site.
Okay, it was probably rejected because the people at the New Yorker know they have a hug audience of gay people who owuld be downright offended plus a huge audience of people like Artie who would be offended because gay people exist.

25 years ago, gay marriage wasn't a big issue, but then gay people found they wanted to have legal protection for themselves, not only when relationships were formed, but also when they were ending. 25 years ago, there was no status under the law for a gay couple in situations where a common-law heterosexual partner had rights. You couldn't be placed on your partner's insurance or benefit plan at work. If your partner were dying, you had no right to be at his/her side. You had no right of inheritance. You could be kicked out of your partner's house with no legal recourse.

When they asked for more rights, they were turned down and sneered at. So they challenged the law. In Canada, it's in the constitution that you cannot discriminate against someone on the basis of their sexual orientation, just like you can't discriminate against someone based on race or religion.

Society denied gay people in long-term relationships basic rights that a man and women could obtain after only a few months to a year of living together.

Artie may not like hearing about it, but when so many states in the Land of Opportunity and Freedom deny a group basic rights and freedoms, you will be hearing about it for a long time. You may want to put your hands over your ears and shout "I can't hear you!" repeatedly, Artie.

I don't get how it's inappropriate, except maybe the bum-twitching part. but even still, it could hardly be construed as erotic - just unearthly.

Never thought I'd defend it, but it's obviously not about being overprotective. So much of a video game is structured that it can inhibit a child's creativity. This, although my first thought was "why would a child play in a hamster cage?", at least brings the idea of creativity back into her son's playtime.

It's more of a tribute than a rejection of the game.

But hasn't the idea been that people who watch tv - couch potatoes - eat more while they're sitting there? Maybe it has more to do with the inactivity.
Does one eat more after being on the computer?

I think you would need to compare it to other sedentary activities.

@moi

Use the Internet for reasearch? Are you mad?

@hmmm....

The Israelis already know that, I'm sure. It's hardly a hot topic of conversation.

Curious. How is that a Mormon Jesus? I assume Jesus posed for more than one sculpture in his life.

I like how he phrases "looked down upon" there. My understanding is that Jesus is considered a prophet by many Muslims, so that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it?

Mitsy, you seem to know a lot about them for someone who doesn't like to watch them. You're part of the problem, you know. They don't care if you object to them, as long as you keep watching the show.

Sindigo, I got the point - it wasn't that difficult to understand. I think you missed my point. It's really the same damn issue. Is this woman making the choices in her life over her own body, or is her husband making the choices for her? It could be like eating potato chips. Once you eat one, you've gotta have another - 20 kids is such a nice round number, but 21 is like Blackjack (think of all the cute jokes), and so on, and so on...

I suggested that this woman has the same amount of control over her body that a woman has who is forced to get an abortion or forced to give birth to an unwanted child. And that is: none.

Like a polygamous wife. Who in her right mind would choose to live in that situation? And yet they do...
