Kristian's Comments

Last year my girlfriend asked for a Finnish Flag to be painted on her face at a Formula One race. I watched in amusement as the worker painted a checkered flag instead (i.e. finish flag)

The University of Maryland considered one such design for it's Performing Arts Center in the 1990's. The building was designed by I.M. Pei and was far and away the best design...and the most expensive. After undergoing the usual bureaucratic nonsense they went with another, much more pedestrian design. Too bad.

Aramax - that's not entirely true. Jacques had no race seat and left F1 not because of choice, but because there was nowhere for him to go, just like Juan Pablo Montoya.

Based on some of these comments it appears that this is somewhat SOP. Blaring the horn constantly would seem to attract attention if they are really trying to avoid it. I know we are missing a lot of the context but it is extremely unfortunate if we are indeed running over any pedestrians, children or otherwise.

I fully understand that any unvarnished video of such a situation will likely cause many, including myself, to feel that we are being jerks and aggressors, and that reality requires a little dirtyness. My idealistic side hopes that we can be civil to one another regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political orientation, but it only takes one jerk to incite equal reactions. Our troops wouldn't drive like that if someone hadn't had killed or attacked them while stopped, but driving like that can't help the natives think highly of us - a lose lose situation no matter how you look at it.

Gosh I wish we could get out of there. I think both sides would be better off in the end......

Re: the number of undecided/agnostic/aetheist....I always wonder if people feel like a bolt of lightning will strike them if they don't answer "christian" on an anonymous survey.

On the map I was disappointed to see various sects grouped into larger units but I suppose I understand. But I wonder if "other christian" makes less sense than Sunni/Shiite?

We visited the "Snowhotel" in Kemi, Finland a few years ago:

http://www.snowcastle.net/

it was sponsored by Finlandia Vodka. Apparently one needs a good stiff drink to spend the night on ice! The beds were covered in reindeer pelts and, while a bit stiff, weren't terribly cold, even though it was one of the coldest days of our trip (in February).

It's got a slot in the front, maybe for a piece that's now missing. The long bracket in the back mounts it as it sits...I'd say that it is a lantern holder.

Acedia - I wonder if Calder's fairly advanced age in the video contributes to your question? Calder was a pretty young man when he started making the circus, and it was the artistic elite in Paris in the 20's that encouraged him to pursue art, particularly kinetic art. Take a look at the horses in the first clip for example - beautifully minimal but also well engineered. His larger works from the time - like the Josephine Baker - are similar in their conception and no less striking.

Thanks for sharing these clips!

I saw one of these monsters lift the statue that sits atop the US Capitol from the ground to its more traditional home. It was hidden behind the Capitol building and when it took off, I couldn't figure out what that tremendous sound was! Soon I saw it - the blades were wider than the dome and it looked like a bug invasion over Washington DC!

This was all the rage back a few years ago due to a software package that transformed digital images into sound waves. Of course due to the extreme differences in media and how they are percieved the sound is total sh-te, but it is still a nice little "easter egg" gift to the nerdy fan. I use sonograms/spectrographs/spectral analysis in my own composition and for analysis (cough published cough). Good stuff! (sorry for the propoganda, but a guy's gotta eat, ya know? ;-) )

I went to two races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year and in both races they had a bank of portajohns with that exact ad. Amazingly, both events saw numerous tourists posing for photographs in front of said urinals.
