Heh heh, I'm sure my mom would LOVE to hear this...she's rather charitable and giving to those she doesn't know, but definitely a cheapskate when it comes to herself/family. I'm gonna go ahead and blame it on her econ doctorate. Or maybe she was raised that way, and that's why she became an economist?
I don't have the link to the story anymore, but a couple years ago, the first adoption to a gay couple in Israel was a guy that they took in when he was disowned at age 15 or 16 for being gay himself. They were recognized as his foster parents fairly soon after they took him in, but I don't think the adoption case was successful until their son was 30 or so?
Skipweasel, it does have "Declutter" on there...is that close enough?
I need to clean my apartment and keep it clean. Of course, there's the normal needing to do better as I finish my degree and losing weight, but those deserve more of a week of planning rather than some overly-optimistic, under-planned "resolution".
Haha, I JUST bought Charlotte Church's first album for christmas, Max :P I love her voice, even though I don't think she sings anymore...she had an interesting talk show for a bit, though.
The only real "new" treatment for rabies is the Milwaukee Protocol, and that hasn't been very successful at all :( But it's cured more than zero percent, so I guess it's always worth a try.
Malachite seems like a common enough mineral that people would know the color...or maybe I've taken too many geology classes. Fallow and Falu Red and Feldgrau I also knew, but mostly from history classes.
!!! Awesome article! I met her at the Oshkosh fly-in I think a year ago? It was her first time there and everyone wanted to talk to her, and I totally don't blame them.
These kids are pretty amazing! A lot of them seem to be from poorer parts of the world, and the stories of some of them show that they're from poor families. I really hope that they don't get exploited or overworked so that they burn out by age 14.
Midori Goto was a great violinist, but at age 15 she couldn't take any more, and quit professional violin for quite a while...even prodigies need to pace themselves.
For a moment, I thought that Wisconsin was Norway, and it would have been weirdly coincidental (the majority of people in the north 2/3 of the state are at least part norwegian). But no. It's finland. Boring finland.
Striatic is right. When someone gets AIDS through a blood transfusion or an organ transplant (not that it happens anymore except in very very rare cases), it's much more notable, because even people who are careful or not sexually active can be infected that way.
The main reason that Ryan White became the poster child for HIV/AIDS, besides the fact that he was expelled from school for it, is because it was still widely thought to be the "gay man's disease", and that the only way you could get it was having sex with another man. He helped publicize the fact that other people could get it, too, and knowing that made people actually give a rat's ass about the disease that they otherwise would have written off as one of a sinful existence.

I like using the Crayola colors as references :D
