Given how little of the earth's history so far contains walking, talking, "intelligent" humans (http://www.neatorama.com/2010/04/29/evolution-timeline/), isn't it possible visitors from the future have simply missed us...
However, it seems a number of commenters don't understand (or at l east haven't considered) supply and demand.
Animals have died unnecessarily for this because there was an additional demand of 40lb of bacon on the bacon economy. 40lb of pig has been wasted, and a new 40lb of pig must be slaughtered to replace it for those people who would otherwise have eaten this bacon.
I was more surprised by the lack of publicity. I imagine most people didn't even know about it.
It may have only been one hour, but it would still have made a massive saving. If we did this every week for an hour, it would be another step in the right direction.
The fad for nightwear in public represents a breakdown of societally accepted conventions and formalities. It's wrong because it's the same selfish attitude as that which is responsible for the rise in knife crime. If we cannot respect ourselves and our fellow citizens, everything falls apart.
There's a difference between wearing nightclothes in public at night due to an emergency, and wearing nightclothes in public during the day because you have no respect for your community.
FWIW, I think it's real, but I'll not cry if somebody proves otherwise. :)

It's disappointing that a fairly interesting article on a pretty 'neat' blog is spoilt by religious spouting.
How do you or anybody else know there was nothing? Were you there?
Think about it.
Lets just enjoy Neatorama.
