With questions like this: "In 1955, how many calories were in the largest size of soda available at McDonald's?" I am doomed to fail. At that point it is mostly obscure factoid knowledge and not how American someone is.
I'm not sure if I would have caught it walking past the Campanile either. Being an Iowa State grad, I walked past it numerous times around noon when the bells normally go off. However, the tune might have been distinct enough. It's just not something you would expect to play across campus.
Psst! Could someone tag this as NSFW. I know it's small, but there is foul language that might offend someone if the were looking at your screen. Not to be a prude, but my co-workers are.
dooflotchie: "“…a French court convicted him of manslaughter in his absence.”
I’d say that makes him a CONVICTED killer, not an ALLEGED killer."
I would have to agree with you there. Even if it were a kidnapping case, I think that he showed enormous restraint and simply followed up on what the Germans should have done previously, extradited the murderer.
I don't think I could restrain myself in this manner.
In the seven years I have been with my wife, we have never had sleeping problems. We are both heavy sleepers but wake up to the alarm somehow. We both sleep better if we are in the same bed.
So, how is spending all the extra money on teacher salaries, utilities, etc. supposed to help with California's budget crunch. I'm sure a deal could be made with the Feds who supply the money.
To those who suggest that kids don't need much vacation, I hope you do realize that kids need a break. It's not the grade school years that are the real issue, but the high school years that are lacking.
This isn't the same thing, but comes close: the case of Kitty Genovese in 1964. She was attacked, raped, and murdered. Many people didn't realize it was an attack, some knew and still did nothing. One person called the police 30 minutes after the first assault, but too late.
People are afraid of being attacked themselves if they help, sued for helping, sued for not helping, and more. It was great that both workers called police, but it would have been even better if the two workers could muster up the courage, grab a tool, and chase off the rapist together (if they knew of the other person's presence).
Me, I would have gone after the guy. Even if it was just me, the person being raped would be an ally and might help for fear of their life. Even if not, I couldn't live with myself after knowing what happened to Kitty.
I've wanted to go down to New Zealand since Willow came out. =) I hear the landing in Wellington is fun with the wind causing the plane to come in slightly sideways.
