Excellent analysis by Larry and Lovey but I think the filmmakers want us to believe she dropped it on purpose. They show Dottie getting mowed down at home by another opponent earlier in the film and she has no trouble holding onto the ball.

If there's one thing we know about these folks, they don't communicate well.
