Pastry Ice Cream Cones Are the Greatest Invention in Human History

(Photo via redditor iBleedorange)

These are trdelník. They are pastries from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Street Food around the World: An Encyclopedia of Food and Culture describes them as a sweet dough made into long strands, then wrapped around wood or metal rods, then baked while rotating over an open fire. They're often coated with sugar, cinnamon, or nuts after baking.

In this case, an unknown genius has filled the hollow pastry with chocolate sauce and soft serve ice cream!

Pop-Tart Tequila Shots

You've got liquor. You've got sugary pastries. You've got deep frying.

This is a photo of human civilization.

Amy of the food blog Oh, Bite It loves her liquor and her deep fryer. She puts them together in this wonderful concoction called the Pop-Tart Tequila Shot. First, she prepared a batter of tequila and pancake mix. She dipped Pop-Tarts into batter, then deep fried them. Finally, she topped the traditional breakfast food with a glaze of lemon juice and sprinkles. Yummy! This will make getting the kids to eat breakfast so much easier.

What Fruits and Vegetables Looked Like Before We Domesticated Them

Wild Carrot | Image: Genetic Literacy Program

For better or for worse, we humans seem to leave our mark on everything we touch. In the context of the article linked below, the topic is fruits and vegetables: their appearance before and after human domestication. Whether these changes in our produce come about by GMO, in which genes are spliced from other organisms, or specialized breeding plans by farmers (commonly referred to as selective breeding), the results can be significant.

Like the wild carrot pictured above, this article lists before and after pictures of fruits and vegetables that humans have altered to their tastes.  Via The Presurfer

Hamburger with a Pizza Bun

(Photo: @pipizzatruck)

Add a scoop of ice cream on top and you've got all 3 food groups covered!

Anthony Calleo operates the Pi Pizza Truck, a food truck in Houston, Texas that serves gourmet pizzas. He's now offering a fresh take on his most popular dish, which is a pizza with soppressata salami. He wraps it around a hamburger, then adds olive tapenade. There's no need for further condiments because the pizza bun itself has them inside.

Calleo calls it the Jumping the Shark Burger. Each one costs $16 because, well, it is a gourmet pizza.

These Comics Prove Cooking Is Basically Impossible

(Comic Via PoorlyDrawnLines)

A good cook will often take their culinary skills for granted, because they most likely learned to cook when they were young and can't remember what it's like to feel lost in the kitchen.

On the other hand, those who seriously can't cook see the skill as some kind of high level wizardry, and when they try to do anything more than boil a pot of water the skill of cooking seems impossible.

(Comic Via OwlTurd)

But if they can figure out which ingredients taste good together, and the amount of time and temperature needed to safely cook it all, you may one day manage to make a decent meal!

Just remember this- it's all about the ingredients, so choose wisely...

The 50 Egg Roll Challenge

Certain cylindrical foods are a big hit with the competitive eating crowd because they're easy to chomp down by the dozen, but I can't recall ever seeing an eating contest involving egg rolls.

On one hand they seem like they'd be fairly easy to eat, and tasty enough to keep the eater going, but the fact that they're deep fried makes them seem like a heart attack inducing choice for an eating challenge.

Well, nobody has ever accused "Megatoad" Matt Stonie of being a health nut!

Edible Spoon Maker Takes the Bread Bowl Concept Even Further

It's a nifty idea that could be good for entertaining guests. Serve soup in bread bowls alongside these bread spoons. Just trim canned dough in the shape of a spoon, slip it inside the Edible Spoon Maker, and bake it for a few minutes.

The underside of the spoon is ridged to make it easier to break off pieces and eat the spoon once you're done with the rest of your food. Try different flavored doughs in the spoon maker to accent the soup.

Five Microwave Oven Myths Debunked

The microwave has been an integral part of the home kitchen for over half a century, and yet we're constantly told it emits radiation, makes food unhealthy and cooking anything covered in foil can start a fire.

But we've all knows somebody who stands right in front of the microwave oven while they're food cooks or sticks tin foil covered dishes in the micro and doesn't even bat an eyelash as sparks fly inside the machine. So what's the real deal?

Truth is foil is fine in the microwave as long as it covers less than 1/4 of the food, and as long as the sheet is kept flat it won't spark, since the sparks are caused by the crinkles in the foil.

(YouTube Link)

And this video by Reaction debunks the theory that microwaved food is less healthy, and explains why microwaving is actually "one of the best ways to maintain nutritional value in food".

Cadbury Creme Eggs Restaurant Opens

(Images: Cadbury Creme Egg)

What animal lays the Cadbury creme egg? I don't want to know. I am satisfied that it is a wonderful animal.

You can do anything with a Cadbury creme egg, including deep frying it, making a Scotch egg, a toad-in-a-hole, or eggs Benedict. It's Nature's perfect food, so I'm glad that Cadbury has chosen to open a restaurant in London that serves it in everything.

The Evening Standard described the project in January:

The ground floor is designed for those busy egg-ophiles who are short on time, and will serve Creme Egg toasties to go. Yes, you read right, that’s: Creme. Egg. Toasties. They’ll sell for just £2 a pop.

Up on the first floor there’ll be more of a restaurant vibe, with four Creme Egg dishes on offer to eat in. As well as the toasties, these will include: egg and soldiers, Creme Egg tray bake, and strawberries and creme (egg).

All dishes on the first floor will cost £4, which we'd say is well worth shelling out for the novelty alone. Tea, coffee and water will be available — no Creme Egg cocktails, alas.

On the second floor there will be an interactive ball pool — which, as far as we’re aware, won’t contain any actual Creme Eggs. It's a good opportunity for adults to splash around in a ball pool without scaring little kids and alarming their parents, though.
