Coconut-Flavored Pineapple

Scientists in Australia have developed a pineapple that has a coconut flavor -by accident! They were trying to create a hybrid pineapple with a sweeter flavor, which they did, but it coincidentally tastes like a coconut. Perfect or pina coladas!

"It's sweet, low acid, very juicy," said Garth Sanewski, a senior horticulturalist at Queensland's department of agriculture.

"It has this lovely coconut flavour, which you won't find in any other pineapple in Australia."

The pineapple hybrid is called AusFestival, and should be commercially available in a couple of years. Link -via Laughing Squid

The Burger That's So Hot You Have to Sign a Waiver Before Eating It

Fallout Challenge

No, Atomic Burger insists, they're not kidding. If you want to eat the Fallout Challenge -- a burger rated at millions of Scoville units, you'll have to sign a waiver of liability. You also have to wear gloves because otherwise you'll burn your hands with that thing that you're about to put inside your body.

But enduing that experience, assuming that you actually survive, is worth the pain. That's because you get a free t-shirt and your name on the restaurant's Wall of Flame:

Just one in ten of the 500 people who've taken the challenge have completed it so far, with Mr Bunce admitting he could only manage a quarter of the burger.

He added: 'We did a four-week special of the Fallout Challenge, but after the special came to an end we had so many people asking to do it, it ended up becoming a permanent fixture on our menu.

'The sauce in the burger contains a variety of chillies including the Ghost Chilli and the Scotch Bonnet. But what gives the sauce a real kick is the Ghost Chilli extract which registers at 4.2 million Scoville units.

A Denny's in Las Vegas Has a Built-in Wedding Chapel

Denny's

Why? Because most wedding chapels won't offer you a Grand Slamwich at 3 AM immediately after you get married. That problem is now solved. Frances Allen, Denny's chief marketing officer, explained:

The diner chain’s newest location will feature a photo booth in which vacationers and locals can pose with trademark Denny’s products. Those photos, Allen said, can be shared instantly on Facebook and Twitter.

“We wanted to create a unique experience,” Allen said. “We have a lot of interactive features and a lot of things that make this location even more fun.”

For example, she said, the diner has a full cocktail bar. The bar serves, among other items, a bacon-flavored martini.

In addition, the location has some other only-in-Vegas features, including a wedding chapel. “It’s quite a unique experience,” she said, adding that couples can get a cake made out of Denny’s pancake puppies to make their ceremony extra special.

The new store also has Elvis-themed menu items like King Stack — pancakes with bananas, bacon and peanut butter — and the King Milkshake, featuring the same three ingredients.

Pizza Hut Perfume

Yes, it's a real thing. Pizza Hut Canada made 100 bottles of perfume featuring the scent pizza.

Here's the full story: Grip Limited, an advertising firm that works with Pizza Hut Canada, originally originally floated the tongue-in-cheek notion on the Pizza Hut Canada Facebook page back in August as part of a broader push to promote more engaging social media activity. The post asked fans to dream up names for an imaginary scent inspired by "the smell of a box of Pizza Hut pizza being opened." But the fan response to the idea was so enthusiastic that Grip and Pizza Hut decided to make the perfume a reality.

A month and a half later, to commemorate the fact that Pizza Hut Canada had gotten 100,000 fans, the chain's community managers announced that the first 100 people to message them would actually get a bottle of Pizza Hut perfume. And sure enough, the bottles were shipped to those 100 lucky fans at the beginning of December.

There are no plans to make more -yet. Of course, if the demand is there, they still have the formula. Link -via Fark

The History of Peanut Butter: A Crunchy March of Progress

peanut butter and bacon sandwich

That all-American food, peanut butter, began with the devastation of American cotton by the boll weevil and the cultivation of peanuts as an alternative cash crop. As America advanced in the world, so did peanut butter. Jon Krampner wrote Creamy and Crunchy, a history of peanut butter. In the New Yorker, Jon Michaud summarized and reviewed it. Here's how two of the three major brands developed:

Peter Pan, introduced in 1928, was the first dominant national peanut butter. It used a partial-hydrogenation process patented by Joseph Rosefield, an entrepreneur from Lexington, Kentucky. In 1932, after Peter Pan’s parent company sought to cut his licensing fee, Rosefield ended the partnership and started making his own brand: Skippy. Inventive and obsessed with quality control, Rosefield emerges as perhaps the most important and likable figure in the history of peanut butter. By the end of his career, he held ten patents relating to the food and numerous notable innovations. He set up his own research lab and conceived a new way of churning—rather than grinding—his peanuts to produce a smoother texture. By introducing fragments of crushed peanuts into his butter, he invented crunchy—or chunky, if you prefer. He instituted the wide-mouth jar that has been standard ever since. And he paid his employees well, to boot. Five years before Reese’s created its peanut-butter cup, Rosefield brought Choc-Nut Butter to market. He seems to have been a little too far ahead of the curve in combining peanuts and chocolate: the product failed. Nevertheless, Skippy thrived, overtaking Peter Pan in the late forties and remaining the nation’s favorite until 1980.
