How to Make an Edible Strawberry Balloon from Strawberries

(Video Link)

The preparation process is, to put it mildly, laborious. But RuyGin, a restaurant in Tokyo, is ranked by critics as the 22nd best in the world. Its chefs did not acquire their reputation by slacking off. During the video, they appear to use, among many other tools, liquid nitrogen, an air pump and a blowtorch.

How to Make a Rice Krispie Treat Beer Cozy

It's a scientifically authenticated proposition: Rice Krispie treats are an effective insulator! The website My Science Project subjected their sweet device to rigorous testing and was impressed:

The Rice Krispies performed admirably, better than one of the best can cozies we tested. They work well as an insulating material because each individual grain of crisped rice traps multiple pockets of air. And when the Rice Krispies are suspended in molten marshmallows, more air is trapped in the interstices between the cereal. The cereal is a pretty nonconductive material, and the trapped air prevents heating due to convection. The light color of the cereal may also help by deflecting heat radiation. Of course, it probably helped that the Rice Krispies were about 1 ½ to 2 inches thick – compared to about a half inch of foam in the standard can cozy. But 2 inches is about the average thickness of a Rice Krispies Treat.

Given that it was 103 degrees F in the shade when we tested the Rice Krispies Treat can cozy, we expected it might just melt into a puddle of sticky goo halfway through the trial. But it surprised us by holding together for well over an hour. At the end of the experiment it was a bit stickier on the outside and bottom, but not really any worse for wear. We sampled a portion and found it still edible and delicious.

My question: could one make an effective parka from Rice Krispie treats?

S'More Stuffed Strawberries

Behold the march of progress! Once, s'mores were but a dream in the soul of primitive man. Now, thanks to Jasmin Fine, you can find them inside and around whole strawberries.

Jasmin stuffed the hollowed out strawberries with graham cracker crumbs and rolled the outside in more graham cracker crumbs. Then she dipped the strawberries in chocolate, spooned marshmallow on them and toasted them over an open flame.

Stanley Cup Made out of Meat

According to tradition, the winning team is supposed to drink beer out of the cup. That probably won't work with a cup made of compressed meat. But the geniuses at Man B Que designed a beer cheese to accompany their magnificent trophy.

The Periodic Table of McDonald's

Last week, my husband and I got sandwiches from McDonalds. I ordered the Bacon Cheese Quarter Pounder, and he ordered the Bacon Habanero Ranch Quarter Pounder. They were exactly the same price, but his had lettuce and tomato in addition to the habanero ranch sauce (they also mislabeled them, so I ate his). He was a little put out that two sandwiches of the same price had such different compositions, meaning he wanted the lettuce and tomato. But now we have a handy chart that explains exactly what is on (or in) every item on the McDonalds menu. No more surprises! The full size chart is at Bloomberg Businessweek. Link -via Digg
