What’s Your Home State’s Signature Cocktail?

Hannah Gregg constructed a map of the United States with a cocktail for each state. At Buzzfeed, you'll find a list under the map with each state's drink, it's ingredients, and a little history behind it. Kentucky is the mint julep, which I wold have guessed. It supposedly contains Bourbon, sugar and water… hey, what about MINT? I don't know about Louisville, but the rest of the state only hears about mint juleps in May. Otherwise, you'll run into moonshine a lot more often. But then, moonshine is not a cocktail. Did she select the drink recipe for your state well?

I accept Mai Tais for California, because it was a creation of Trader Vic, and growing up in L.A., my family's #1 choice for "fancy/festive/special/expensive" eating out was Trader Vic's location in Beverly Hills. Saw a lot of Mai Tais before I was old enough to drink one, and once I was, it was okay, but not macho enough for a Young Man.

Washington State's "Ready or Not"

Equal Parts Vodka, Tonic, and Trader Joe's Blood Orange, over ice. Great on the veranda on a sunny day. Garnish with lime if so desired.

"Drink: The Chicago Fizz (Dark rum, ruby port, lemon juice, sugar, club soda, and egg whites)
Why?: While New Orleans is credited with the origination of the fizz, the Chicago variation’s claim to fame was its popularity at the Waldorf-Astoria bar in New York during the pre-prohibition era."

So, no connection with Chicago whatsoever other than the name, and no connection with the rest of the state at all.

Also, never heard of this drink, and rum and port aren't really go-to drinks in Chicago/Illinois. Total fail.
