Here's a very interesting post about Peter Norman, the white guy in the famous raised black gloved fists picture on the 1968 Olympic podium. We all know that picture and its historical ripples, but do you know Peter Norman's place in it?

I remember the '68 Olympics and all the furor surrounding the Black Power salute. Though derided by many in the US as an "unamerican" act, it turned out to be a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. Many years later, I realized how much of the world was segregated. Here in the US, Peter Norman was a lost casualty of the struggle. Happily he has been remembered.

I know him, he's an Aussie!
The Australian parliament actually made an official (posthumous) apology to him for the way he was treated when he got back to Australia. I'd never heard of him until a couple of years ago - and we're a country that usually idolizes it's sporting heroes.
