Our sciences and education tell us that there are three dimensions of space. However, the notion that we inhabit a realm with any sort of mathematical structure has its roots in Western culture. The proper geometric description of space has been a major quest in theoretical physics, and present string theory suggests that there may be as many as 11 spatial dimensions. But what do these "extra" dimensions actually do?
