Who Actually Created Thousand Island Dressing?

It's a common story: Someone comes up with a recipe (or song, or invention), and then finds out that it already exists. Or someone, either unconsciously or maybe consciously copies someone else. We probably won't find out who the true originator of Thousand Island dressing is, but honestly, how hard is it to combine mayonnaise and ketchup and dress it up with relish?
