About 100 Drivers Got Stuck on Google Map Detour

Most of us may agree that the Internet helps us make our daily lives easier. Helping us escape a traffic jam, for instance. However, the Internet is not perfect. It may give wrong advice just like what happened in Denver.

Last Sunday on Peña Boulevard, a road leading to Denver International Airport,  there was a car crash. Drivers were prompted by the app, Google Maps, to take a detour to escape the traffic and save time.

But it was too good to be true.

The alternate route took drivers down a dirt road that rain had turned into a muddy mess, and cars started sliding around.
Some vehicles couldn't make it through the mud, and about 100 others became trapped behind them.

The article reminded us that we should not blindly follow what the Internet says.  Instead, we must be critical and make our own judgement.

Article mislabeled, should read, "Google identifies multiple clueless individuals". If, in the history of your driving, you've never left a conventional road and turned on to a dirt road, why would you do it because Google knows better!?! Where's personal accountability and responsibility?
Google says turn on to muddy path but my vehicle isn't designed to handle those conditions. Oh well, sounds like a great idea!

Exactly. There is no substitute for knowing where you're going and planning ahead.
I have had to tell my previous roommate several times to ignore Google Maps. Around here, it will put you on a toll road or city surface streets to shave a single minute off your route. Occasionally it even treats parking lots as if they were roads. :P

This is why I don't put too much faith in Google Maps. It has given me problems in the past, and on more than one occasion sent me on a Sally-Go-Round-the-Rosebush route. I always get a second opinion from Bing Maps or Mapquest, and use street view to double-check my route.

Getting out to DIA is a pain and there really isn't any way but up Peña Boulevard. I always add an extra hour of planning when heading to DIA. If I don't run into traffic I explore the Illuminati symbols in the terminal.
