Engaging Data has an interactive graph that breaks down where American households get their money, and where it goes. At the website, you can change the graph to show subgroups, like the five quintiles of income level or the age of the head of household. There are some interesting differences. In the lowest two quintiles, there's a category called "borrowing and savings," where money is drawn from either the past or the future, that doesn't appear in the other income groups.
