The Doppel Chain

A romantic getaway goes horribly wrong in Australian writer director Scott Pickett’s new supernatural thriller The Doppel Chain which made its festival screening debut at last year’s Sydney Film Festival.

When a couple cross paths with a disoriented girl on a remote wilderness road and decide to take her in, their evening takes an unexpected turn as the night settles in. Tingling with a darkly nervous tension, the short film stars Australian actors Josh Lawson (House of Lies, The Little Death, Anchorman 2) and Hayley Magnus (The Dressmaker, Mental), and also features American rising star Trieste Kelly Dunn (Blindspot, Banshee).

Before Us there was The Doppel Chain.

Shot in Utah the United States, and enlisting the support of a local crew, The Doppel Chain saw Pickett collaborate with co-writer James Ross-Edwards and director of photography Sean Bagley. And whilst the filmmakers’ aim was to evoke an atmosphere of primal terror, it was also important for them to capture a sense of fragility in the film’s performances.

On another level the director admits he was also exploring the idea of self-sabotage. “I like the idea that this “monster” picks out a particular flaw in the other person and uses that to get “its” way,” Pickett says. “The monster creates a set of circumstances that leaves the character to do the monster’s bidding. To me, it's a reflection of our day to day whereby it’s our vulnerabilities or even our fear of revealing these vulnerabilities that can be our undoing.”

About Scott Pickett:

On his approach to storytelling, Pickett states: “To me storytellers are really about helping their fellow earthlings understand a little more about themselves. You can only really do that if you capture them though. Whether it means cracking open their heart by weaving a grueling tragic tale, making them laugh with gross-out humour, or by frightening the living shit out of them… it doesn’t matter. It’s what you’re saying underneath that’s the important thing.”

With a number of film and TV projects in various stages of development, Pickett continues to balance his personal projects with his portfolio of award-winning commercial work.

Scott Pickett is represented by Scoundrel in Australia, Sanctuary in the US, Superette in France, Soup Film in Germany, Wilfred Park in Canada, Pumpkin Film in Switzerland.

He is represented for Film and TV by Ken Freimann at Circle of Confusion in the USA and Edwina Stuart at HLA management in Sydney.
