The Real Reason Why Garfield Isn't Funny

(YouTube link)

In case you've ever wondered why the comic strip Garfield isn't funny, comic artist Jim Davis will readily admit to the fact that it wasn't even designed to be funny. The cartoon cat is wildly popular in spite of this ...or specifically because of this. Simon Whistler of Today I Found Out explains the thinking behind Garfield. Despite the apparent length, the story is less then 12 minutes.

Humor is tough - things that are funny to some people just aren't funny to others. I used to think that Jay Leno was far funnier than David Letterman, and by the ratings, many people agreed with me. But if you read about them in the media (especially the hip media), you'd think otherwise.

Look at the really old Garfields that Davis drew before others took over that job. The artwork is poor, the plots perfunctory and the jokes lame and repetitive. It not being funny is true but the 'I meant to do that' explanation is lame. Being first has distinct advantages over being best; just ask Bill Gates. As I understand it, today Davis does no writing or artwork, but he personally does all of the $$ counting.

So what's Simon's Cat's excuse?
