Women Dancing Miserably In Western Art

ah, sisters
are you happy?
yes, dreadfully happy
then we’re all happy

Mallory Ortberg brought us Unsatisfied Women In Western Art History quite some time ago. She revisits the idea of assigning feelings and motivations to historical artworks occasionally, including dancing women for the latest installment. Why are they so unhappy? Is it because they had to dance for the artist? I’d hate to even think about that, considering it often took months to paint a picture. See more of these at The Toast. Contains art nudes.

Or maybe that's what the human race used to look like every day. Throughout most of history, there was never any reason (or time) to smile. Smiling wasn't invented until sometime in the 1920s.
