This Is a Library Building

(Photo: Allison Meier)

Should you think outside of the box? Yes. But first, explore the world of knowledge within it. This architectural gem is The Square Head, a sculpture and functional library building designed by Sasha Sonso. It was completed in 2002 and now serves as part of the central library of Nice, France.

Although it looks like a black cube, the panels on the face are actually windows. It is 92 feet tall and has 3 interior floors.

I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain that is the remains of the original housing for the doomed monkeys and dogs that were being shot into space during the early days of the Russian space program.

It's the center of an old piece of playground equipment, kind of like a teeter-totter, but not. When it was in use there would have been two poles connected at right angles and extending through the centers of the holes in the shown artifact. The poles, at their connection point, would have also been connected to the heavy springs visible at the bottom of the artifact. At the end of each pole would have been a seat for a child. The children would use this piece of playground equipment for bouncing, kind of like a teeter-totter, but with the added effect of being knocked sideways by their peers bouncing on the other pole.

It is a space helmet for the little girl from "The Exorcist". 360 degree viewing perfect for when she spun her head. Sadly the design was scuttled because they couldn't find a way to empty the sphere of violent vomiting puke in outer space.

I think it is a piece of playground equipment too - but the connector piece between tubes kids crawl through - two of the circles would be connected to tubes, and two would have bubble plastic windows to look through.

Though it looks like a center piece to a piece of playground equipment it is actually a Kracken holding bay from Davy Jones locker. The lock mechanism can be seen on the bottom. Release the Kracken!

It's the centre hub of a wind turbine propeller.

The three large openings are where the propeller blades are attached, the smaller opening that is at the bottom in the photo is where the propeller is attached to the generator unit on top of the mast.

No t-shirt please.

The missing piece from the Large Hadron Collider. Oh you didn't know about it? It's why there's going to be a black hole created where earth and our solar system get sucked into it like a stellar toilet flush on Dec. 21st.

the recovered escape pod that the droids crashed landed on Tatooine. It was part of the deal with Lucas and Disney... he had to hand it over. Disney is in the process of restoring it as the centre piece for their next after-school special.

After the Millennium Falcon was decommissioned, Princess Leia had the gun turret from Lukes first space battle saved from the scrap heap. It is now in the Rebel Museum located on New Alderon. Visiting hours vary.
