Steampunk Wheelchair for a Boy with Muscular Dystrophy

Kyron Cheek, 14, has muscular dystrophy. The Make-A-Wish Foundation offered him a wish. He decided that what he wanted more than anything else was a steampunk wheelchair.

Make-A-Wish approached ModVic, a company that modifies gear with steampunk styles. The company held a contest which invited steampunk artists and product designers to remake a pre-existing electric wheelchair into the epitome of steampunk fashion.

Greg Hurley won that contest with the wheelchair pictured above. It's based on a Quantum E6 Edge. Hurley views it as a prototype and Kyron as the tester. He doesn't want this to be just a one-off design, but one that is eventually mass produced.
