On the Ocean

Patrick Bérubé's Incidence is a subtle work of art. At first glance, it's a toy lying on a wooden floor. But upon closer inspection, you can see that he's used the shape of the slats to create the image of a container ship traveling through the sea. This composition is on display at Gallerie SAS in Montreal through January 21.

I've come back to look at this a few times now and if the slats do indeed create the image of a ship, I just can't see it. Wavy lines. That's all I'm getting. Perhaps floorboard art just isn't my thing.

The best part is that one needn't master any particular artistic skill.
The worst part is that it is forgotten as soon as it's seen, like a leaf on the sidewalk.
