Special Door Serves as Earthquake Shelter

Younghwa Lee, a graduate student in design at Kingston University, designed this door. In the event of an earthquake, it folds in half to create a crude shelter from falling objects. The doorframe contains a wind-up flashlight, drinking water, and medical supplies.

this looks really bad and doesn't make any sense. why would you hide under a flimsy door when you could stand under the door frame? Obviously this student wasn't thinking about the ceiling collapsing. Do your research!!!

seekshelter: the door frame is the strongest supporting area to any wall; standing under a doorway during an earthquake is the safest place to be unless you are under a very strong desk.

there's no support on the edge of that door. if there was, this would be more useful but not as strong as standing under the doorway.

I don't understand what saul is confused about. When you are under this (folded) door, you are also under the door frame, with all of its protection plus the protection of the door itself re debris.

This is a great idea. It looks like there's support for the door about half way between the upper edge and the lower edge which meets the lower half of the door. It looks like the door will provide a good amount of cover from falling debris which would then tip over the edge or slide down.

It looks like the handle is protruding.

If a heavy piece of debris impacts the folded upper door portion will it drive the handle into some ones Head or back?

Are there safe guards to prevent this from happening (Locking action, collapsible handles etc?)

IMO, it seems like the door is more for protection from falling stuff (books, ceiling tiles, picture frames, etc.) rather than building debris. In the event that chunks of building come crashing down, neither the concept door nor the classic door frame will be much protection.

is the doorframe stronger in all buildingsd? or just the flimsy wooden houses? seeing as i recently had a door cut in a concrete wall, i doubt its stronger than the wal..

*forgot to add: with a little adaptation this could make a nice table in smaller kitchens and stuff like that, just fold the door to the garage (or something) in half to have extra workspace. Promotes cleaning up afterwards ass well :)
