The War of the World Book Covers Throughout the Ages

H.G. Well's classic The War of the Worlds has been continuously in print for over 100 years - here is an image collection of 318 book covers from 1898 to the present: http://drzeus.best.vwh.net/wotw/wotw.html - via Fazed

Most of these covers feature illustrations of the Martian fighting machines. What a strange assortment of designs, many of them quite bizarre. Only 3 or 4 closely resemble Well's description, suggesting professional illustrators often don't read books whose covers they are drawing.
