Searching for the Most Horrible Sound in the World.

Dr Trevor Cox, professor of acoustic engineering at Salford University is trying to find out what makes annoying sounds so horrible ... the best thing is, you can vote for the worst sound ever:

Fingernails scraping down a blackboard... the scream of a baby... your neighbour's dog barking: what is the worst sound in the world? This is what this website has been trying to find out.

Acoustic science is concerned with the production, transmission, manipulation and reception of sound, from unwanted traffic noise to beautiful music. Acoustics is about both the physical properties of sound waves and the reaction of humans. This website is interested in the often complex ways in which people perceive and interpret sounds. The aim is to increase awareness of sound psychology by examining what makes a sound unpleasant to hear. Your votes on the site will also give us an insight into what is the worst sound in the world, and maybe why it is the worst sound.

Some of them are unbearable ... The dentist's drill makes me think of Steve Martin.

My Dad has very thick, sturdy fingernails, and when I was a kid his favorite thing to do to drive us nuts was to drag those accursed things across the top of the car hood. On the "EEK!" scale, it's right up there with nails across the chalkboard--but with the uncomfortable sound of screeching metal added.

Ooooh, my teeth still chatter just remembering it...*shudder*

After spending about 20 minutes on that site, I still have to say that the worst sound in the world is turning the keys to start your car, when you've already started it!
