Weta's Ray Gun.

Check out these cool ray guns, made by Weta Workshop designer Greg Broadmore: Link - via Boing Boing and Thanks Jim Perry!

By the way, Weta Workshop [wiki] in New Zealand makes props for movies and TV, and came to prominence with their productions of costumes, armors, weapons, creatures, and miniatures for The Lord of the Rings. The company's name is thought to be from a pre-historic looking New Zealand insect [wiki] that looks like a cross between a cockroach and a cricket with very large legs!

Whatdaya mean, "thought to be"? Everybody here in New Zealand knows what a weta is. We see them every so often in our gardens. And yes, they're big, at least compared to grasshoppers and crickets. See http://weta.boarsnest.net/
