The Faces of the Members of Legendary Rock Bands Combined into One Image

Shaving and grooming products dealer West Coast Shaving created composite images of members from 30 celebrated rock and roll bands to come up with an "average" of each band's faces. The result is a fascinating study of their features; the most prominent stand out and are easy to identify when one thinks of the faces of each member. To see the facial composites of all 30 bands, visit this link.

Angora Show Rabbits: Life Doesn't Get Much Fluffier

Photographer Andres Serrano took photos of Angora rabbits participating in the National Angora Show for a New York Times article, and the resulting shots are adorable. The National Angora Show, held in Palmyra, New York, is the rabbit equivalent to the Westminster Dog Show.

Cops Pay Ransom to Hackers to Get Their Files Back

According to the Boston Globe, the Tewksbury, Massachusetts, police department was so desperate to get the information from their computers that had been encrypted by hackers, they ended up paying the requested sum of $500 for the decryption key. And they aren't the only police department that has resorted to paying hackers in so-called "ransomware" schemes. From the Globe:

"At first, the problems with the Tewksbury Police Department system — difficulty calling up arrest and incident records — seemed to be just the usual system crankiness. No big deal.

But it persisted, and a technician was called in.

That was when the menacing message popped up on the screen, an explanation in the form of a ransom note:

“Your personal files are encrypted,” it read. “File decryption costs ~ $500.”

It continued: “If you really value your data, then we suggest you do not waste valuable time searching for other solutions because they do not exist."

Because they hadn't backed up their systems, the Tewksbury Police were in a terrible position. Read the rest of the story, as well as that of the other U.S. police departments that have fallen victim to the same schemes, at the Boston Globe.

Peel off the Entire Shell of a Hard Boiled Egg Within Seconds

On a recent Neatorama post about deviled eggs, a reader mentioned in the comments that he was never able to master getting the eggs peeled so that the white was still relatively in one piece. He's certainly not alone. Sometimes even employing the best advice about soaking them in cold water or making sure they aren't too fresh from the store doesn't quite work for every egg.

This video makes peeling an egg in an instant look like a snap, and while I haven't tested the method, many commenters on the YouTube video page are reporting back after using the trick and saying it worked for them. It's worth a try. I believe I'll give this a shot tomorrow. I'll leave a comment here as to whether it worked for me.

New Carnivorous Plant Named for H.R. Giger

A stunning new cultivar of carnivorous plant is named for none other than H.R. Giger. This Nepenthes (commonly known as the pitcher plant) was registered by photographer and horticulturist Matthew M. Kaelin, whose submission read in part,

"I named this plant Nepenthes ‘H.R. Giger’ in October 2014 in memory of the recently passed Surrealist Artist from Switzerland who is perhaps best-known for creating the Alien creature for director Ridley Scott’s 1979 film “Alien”, which earned him an Academy Award for the Best Achievement in Visual Effects for his designs of the film’s title character, the stages of its lifecycle, and the film’s extraterrestrial environments. As the innovator of the nightmarish “Biomechanical” style, he had a long and well-respected career as a globally influential fine artist in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, industrial design, and interior design. When viewed extremely close and at an angle, the intersection of the peristome teeth and the lid spikes of the cultivar create a frightening alien landscape akin to those imagined by the late H.R. Giger (Fig. 6). This, and because the plant is darkly colored and has such a nightmarish appearance, I feel that it would be a fitting tribute to name the cultivar for the late visionary genius Hans Ruedi Giger."

UK Lingerie Brand Launches Campaign to Honor Fuller Figured Women

Last year, lingerie corporate giant Victoria’s Secret caught a backlash when it ran the ad pictured below, which detractors said was unrealistic in terms of supposedly representing a range of women's shapes and sizes.

Now UK-based lingerie maker Curvy Kate, which specializes in bra cup sizes from D-K, has launched a campaign that is an obvious send-up of the Victoria's Secret ad.

Leather and Lace: Twenty Portraits of Stevie Nicks in the Seventies

Fleetwood Mac vocalist and successful solo artist Stephanie Lynn Nicks had trouble pronouncing her own name when she was a kid, instead pronouncing it "tee dee." Thus, Nicks unintentionally created the nickname that stuck with her from early life to international fame. Her overprotective mother made her stay home more often than not, and in her time spent isolated she developed a love of fairy tales, which may in part account for her trademark frilly, romantic look.

This collection of Stevie Nicks portraits shot at the height of her success shows the diva in a series of ensembles that showcase her feminine style. She somehow appeared simultaneously innocent and with the air of an experienced, well traveled woman of rock and roll.

Modern Pool Tables

Who likes to shoot pool? I certainly do. I also wouldn't mind owning one of these sleek, transparent pool tables. The Elite Innovations company patented a surface called Vitrik, which they claim is a flawless substitute for the rolling resistance of a felt table, and laid over strengthened glass instead of slate. Some elaborately carved wooden tables are beautiful as well, but to suit a modern interior, this would be just the thing.

Read more on and see other styles of these pool tables and see a video of their use here.

The Mental Disorders of Beloved Cartoon Characters

Poor, poor Eeyore. Fans may write off his sadness as slight and occasional melancholy or think that he has a flair for pessimism. It turns out there's a psychiatric diagnosis with his name on it. Same with Bugs and a number of other cool cartoon characters. Many speak of the stigma of mental illness; it may be that the popularity of these long suffering, brave souls will affect positive change in that regard. See more cartoon characters whose personailities line up with DSM-V entries here.

History's Lesser Known U.S. Presidential Assassinations Were Utterly Gruesome

President James A. Garfield

While the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln have been well covered in media presentations, the deaths of James A. Garfield and William McKinley, the 20th and 25th presidents respectively, have not been as widely featured. Yet both stories are dramatic, and tragically the two died slow and agonizing deaths in those days devoid of the benefits of modern medicine.

An article at TrueCrime i09 quotes historic accounts of the events following the violence. While they are graphic, they are also fascinating, as well as an integral part of our national history. Read the article here, as well as the Smithsonian and History.com pieces on which it was based.

High Winds Make for a Terrifying Experience for These Window Washers

The window washers in the footage above were trapped at the mercy of high winds for 15 minutes on the 91st floor of the Shanghai World Financial Center April 2. The scaffolding they were perched upon swayed drastically from side to side and violently hit the windows of the 1,600-foot-tall building (shown in the photo below) numerous times. According to this article at Gizmodo, the Shanghai World Financial Center is the seventh tallest building in the world. Can you imagine? My heart is beating out of my chest just from watching the video!

Deviled Eggs, 20 Ways

Smoked Salmon, Lemon and Caper Deviled Eggs

This is the time of year that a favorite dish is frequently served: deviled eggs. As I love to entertain and to cook, I often have people over for meals. Many times, deviled eggs are on the table as one of the appetizers. They are always a popular item as they are traditional and delicious, yet also low carb, and their fat content can easily be adjusted if desired. I sometimes make them simply, with extra mustard, mayonnaise, a dash or two of either lemon juice, vinegar or hot sauce, and always a lot of chopped, fresh dill. If I want to get more elaborate, this recipe from Emeril Lagasse for deviled eggs with lump crabmeat is never left over. (My one deletion is the caviar/salmon roe.)

This article from Southern Living offers up nineteen ways to prepare deviled eggs. Their recipes look appetizing and simple to prepare, for the most part.

Are you a fan of this classic dish? If so, what's your favorite way to make them?
