We’ve featured a number of great art shows that took place at Gallery 1988 before, but that’s because they have so much awesomely geeky stuff go through there. Their most recent show, Multiplayer x2, focuses exclusively on classic games of the past including Castlevania, Mario and Pac Man. If you happen to be in LA before March 3, be sure check it out.

It’s a crazy concept, but Pac-Man and Middle Aged Mega Man are now part of fighting game history thanks to the upcoming release Street Fighter X Tekken! And, while Mega Man is fat and old in this game, and Pac-Man is piloting some clunky robotic body armor instead of simply chomping down on the opposition, I think they still make a colorful addition to the fighting game genre.
Combining a crazy assortment of characters into a fighting game worked for Super Smash Bros., so this doesn’t seem so far fetched to me. What does seem like a stretch, however, is the idea of a Pac person battling through a tournament full of fierce opponents without the aid of Power Pellets!

Watch as Pac-Man lets down Ms. Pac-Man, and his little Pac children, by succumbing to Skyrim addiction. This NSFW pixel animation is very relatable these days, as Skyrim has created an epidemic of video game addiction virtually unmatched since the world was introduced to Warcraft.
C’mon Pac-Man, you know if you don’t bring home those power pellets the Ms. is going to let herself get caught by a ghost!

Color has always played a key part in the style of video games, and the evolution from 2 to millions of on-screen colors parallels the advancement in game console technology. This bright, cheery infographic shows how far video game colors have come from the days of Pong and Pac-Man.

Everything about this short film by Random Encounters is great: the claymation, the sound effects, and most of all, the lyrics. I used to be sympathetic to the ghosts. But now, not so much. They get what’s coming to them.

Sam Q. Kim, a guy with a lot of time on his hands (and great willpower to not just om nom all of those gummies) made a stop motion video of the little bears representing Tetris, Pac-Man, Breakout and more. It’s really cute, but now I have a sugar craving.

It’s like Tron in reverse – characters from beloved games of yore are stepping off the grid and invading our reality. My lifelong dream of having a drink with Q*Bert may finally come true!
8-bitscapes, a collaboration between artist Jamie Sneddon & photographer Kevin Rozario-Johnson, brings classic video game characters to the real world, and the results are both spectacular and just a teensy bit menacing.
With a ‘giant nod’ towards the world of 8-bit gaming, the artists have produced a series of 8, strictly limited edition prints. These thought provoking images re-imagine well loved, iconic retro digital characters in real life scenarios. Framing them forever as they munch, invade, race, battle and bleep their way around planet EARTTTTTHHHHHH!!

Despite having watched more than my fair share of television in the 1980s, I somehow missed out on these over-the-top commercials (except the Mario Bros. one). Milo assembled 8 of the craziest video game spots from the era where marketers learned the best way to reach young people: shout at them and crank the bad music.

Hah! This one is clever: someone in Japan has created a Pac-Man wallpaper for your iPhone that turns your app icons into a maze for the dot-munchin’ Pac-Man!

Google’s celebration of Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary was fun, enabling people to play Pac-Man on their main search page, either as a one- or two-player game. And people certainly took advantage of the opportunity, spending approximately 4,819,352 hours on the game alone. The result is approximately $120 million in productivity lost, in one day.
Thankfully, Google tossed out the logo with pretty low “perceived affordance” – they put an “insert coin” button next to the search button, but I imagine most users missed that. In fact, I’d wager that 75% of the people who saw the logo had no idea that you could actually play it. Which the world should be thankful for.

This movie doesn’t exist, but it should. It’s called Pac-Man: The Movie. Check out the movie trailer:
Pharmaceutical CEO Michael Pacman is forced to take his own dangerous medications in order to survive a maze designed by a sadistic patient out for revenge.
This 2-minute trailer satirizes and skewers Hollywood’s love for taking video games with barely any plot (e.g. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc.) and turning them into abominably bad feature films. In this trailer, Pacman is given the “Saw” treatment — enter a dark and disturbing world filled with pellets, ghosts, and yes, Pacman.

Three computer scientists at Colorado University programmed several Roomba robotic vacuum cleaners to act like Pac-Man and the ghosts which chase him. Jack Elston, Cory Dixon, and Maciej Stachura did so in order to demonstrate the unmanned aerial system that they are developing.
