Gizmodo held a photoshop contest for video game peripherals that will probably never be developed. Above is the…uh, animal husbandry Nintendo Wii controller by Kent Smith, which took 3rd place. There are 42 reader-submitted images at the link.

Tangible Holograms

Researchers at the University of Tokyo are developing tangile holograms — or rather, a system that uses sensors and Nintendo Wiimotes to give the impression of physical contact by holograms:

A retroreflective marker is attached on the tip of user’s middle finger,” the researchers explain on their website. “IR LEDs illuminate the marker and two Wiimotes sense the 3D position of the finger. Owing to this hand-tracking system, the users can handle the floating virtual image with their hands.”

In the video, the researchers demonstrate how a user can dribble a virtual bouncing ball, feel virtual raindrops bouncing off their hand, and feel a small virtual creature crawling on their palm. The researchers hope that the technology will have applications in video games, 3D CADs, and other uses.

CPR Certification At Home With the Nintendo Wii

Posted by John Farrier in Gadget, Medicine, Toy & Video Games on July 13, 2009 at 3:55 pm

The American Heart Association is funding a student project to develop a CPR certification program that uses the Nintendo Wii:

A biomedical engineering professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham envisioned a program for home computers that could sync via wireless with the Wii remote, and train users on proper resuscitation of people who have suffered cardiac arrest. The students hope to make the program available for download this fall, free of charge, on the American Heart Association’s website.

An embarrassing look at the Wii Fit

So after the absurdity of waiting forever to get my hands on a Wii Fit, I thought it might work for the site I work for to put together a quick video with a few hat tips to other popular online videos detailing what is most likely the experience of 90% of the people who purchase a Wii Fit in order to lose weight and get into shape.

We just posted it this morning and I think it is one of the things that I am both most proud of and most ashamed of ever filming for the internet. I’m sure once the comments start rolling in, the pride will all be replaced with shame…
