Sure we all have things we resent our parents for, but it takes a lot to truly be a bad parent, especially to be named as one of the top ten terrible parents. While many of the cases are heart-breaking stories of abuse, some are just sickening displays of poor parental values -like the mother who bought her seven year-old a boob job. It makes you wish for a change in child abuse laws.

Did you know that the Daleks originated from Doctor Who’s take on the Cuban Missile Crisis?

The second serial presented on Doctor Who, a six-part story called “The Daleks,” was set on a distant world where the nightmare of 1962 actually came to pass; two nations, the Thals and the Dals, had been locked in an arms race for some indeterminate period of time, finally developing nuclear weapons, resulting in a full nuclear exchange between the two and irradiating the planet Skaro. The radiation was so severe that by the time our heroes arrive, the forests are petrified and full of mummified animals. Those who survived the exchange are now drastically mutated. The Thals have mutated full-circle, becoming a handsome race devoted to peaceful coexistence. They believe the Dals are either extinct or so horribly mutated that they cannot emerge from their frozen city. Neither is completely true; the Dals have mutated horribly, to the point where they have no skeletons and are no longer capable of independent life, but they have developed tank-like travel machines, equipped with life support and a formidable weapons system. They have become the Daleks.

For more interesting Doctor Who plots that originated from real events, don’t miss this great article on Mental Floss.

As it turns out though, this big news story is probably pretty bunk. We know that now thanks to Huffington Post blogger Danielle Crittenden, who actually tried this technique and wrote about the outcome.

If you don’t want to read the fairly graphic article, here’s her results:

If there is any smidgen of effect, it’s notional, and probably only psychological. Overall, vodka-in-a-tampon seems a very inefficient, not to mention unpleasant, way to get drunk. I suppose the positive is that there is no danger of a second round.

Makes you wonder how many of these other “disturbing teen trends” are totally untrue too.

Because his feet are slightly uneven, Tom Boddingham ordered them from a custom slipper making company. Unfortunately, the workers filling the order mistook the size 14.50 slipper for an order for a size 1450. That’s right, it’s 100 times the size he ordered, making it big enough for him to sit in.

On the upside, the company fixed the error and now Mr. Boddingham has a nice pair of slippers and an awesome new chair. Tom says he’s hoping to sell it on eBay, where he will probably make a hefty profit. After all, it’s not every day that someone finds a bear-foot slipper the size of an actual bear.

Of course you don’t, because the movie had nothing to do with Disney. Nor has it established itself in the public long enough to become a classic like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. But that hasn’t stopped Disney from announcing that they will be creating an Avatar-themed area at Disney World. Construction is expected to begin by 2013.

While I think Pandora was beautiful, I don’t think it warrants its own Avatarland. What do you guys think?

I think most of us would just run away and kiss Fido goodbye, but Brooke Collins isn’t like most people. Instead, she punched the bear in the face, making it drop her pup and run away.

“It was all so fast. All I could think about was my dog was going to die,” said Collins.

“It was a stupid thing but I couldn’t help it,” she said. “I know you’re not supposed to do that but I didn’t want my dog to be killed.”

Now that’s one dedicated puppy owner.

Vanessa Starr Palm and Alexander Daniel Rust certainly wish they got this advice and heeded it before they visited the Bahamas, killed an endangered lizard, ate it, documented the whole thing with photos and then uploaded the images onto Facebook.

The couple has been charged with violating an animal protection act and may also face additional charges for breaking a U.S. law that bans committing a crime in a country with a relationship to the U.S.

Whoever said video games have no real-world applications has obviously never heard about the little boy who saved his sister from a rampaging moose thanks to the skills he learned playing World of Warcraft:

When the beast went on the offensive, Hans knew the first thing he had to do was taunt it so that it would leave his sister alone and she could run to safety. “Taunting” is a move one uses in World of Warcraft to get monsters off of the less-well-armored team members.

Once he was a target, Hans remember another skill he’d picked up at level 30 in ‘World of Warcraft’ — he feigned death. The moose lost interest in the inanimate Hans and wandered off into the woods.

In the beginning, the German U-boats were hardly a threat to the world’s largest naval powers. Even after the U-l’s dreadful collision during its first test during a training exercise, the German engineers stayed hopeful. Germany now had a powerful weapon.

The Lusitania, carrying war supplies for the war effort, had already been warned prior to its maiden voyage. In fact, the German embassy posted a full page advertisement in the New York Times, warning Americans that German U-boats would be in the water and may attack due to the wartime cargo aboard the ship. Against warnings, the Lusitania sailed. On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat, killing close to 1200 people, 124 of which were Americans. Rumors serviced that blamed German U-boats for the second explosion, after the Lusitania was already sinking. Further investigations, however, proved that the explosion was due to the ammunition aboard Lusitania.
