Androgynous Beauty is a Fashion Supermodel

Posted by Alex in Fashion on February 10, 2012 at 3:14 pm

A beautiful blonde? Yes, a model, actually. But not in the traditional sense you're probably thinking. Meet Andrej Pejic, the world's most famous androgynous fashion model:

As Fashion Week gets under way in New York City, Pejic is one of the most recognizable — and controversial — faces in the industry. He’s the only top-tier fashion model who can walk down the runway as either a man or a woman. And his androgynous beauty has turned him into a trendsetter in an industry that’s always seeking to push the envelope.

“He’s just this beautiful thing that everyone wants a piece of,” says stylist Kyle Anderson, who dressed Pejic for a German magazine cover.

He has the kind of face that makes even the vainest woman jealous: high cheekbones, flawless skin and plump, shapely lips. When he speaks, his ever-so-slight Adam’s apple is the first sign of his masculinity.

Though Pejic isn’t trying to be a woman, many in the transgender community have already claimed him as their own. He is seen as a bit of a maverick, someone who has embraced his sexuality without any need for explanation or justification.

Meet Ryan Langston, the Kid Fashion Model with Down Syndrome

Posted by Alex in Baby & Kids, Fashion on January 17, 2012 at 11:02 am

Rick Smith of the blog Noah's Dad, noticed something unusual in a Target circular. Like his son Noah, the model wearing the orange shirt has Down Syndrome.

That's very inclusive and all, but what really got Rick feeling good is that Target didn't make a big deal about it at all. He wrote:

This wasn’t a “Special Clothing For Special People” catalog. There wasn’t a call out somewhere on the page proudly proclaiming that “Target’s proud to feature a model with Down syndrome in this week’s ad!” And they didn’t even ask him to model a shirt with the phrase, “We Aren’t All Angels” printed on the front.

In other words, they didn’t make a big deal out of it. I like that.

Rick's post went viral and the model, Ryan Langston, got quite a bit of attention:

On the Internet, parents of other special needs children are praising the ads -- and Ryan -- an outpouring that's surprised and overwhelmed his parents, Amanda and Jim Langston. [...]

"The fact that they are not making a big deal - it's ironic," Ryan's father Jim said. "It's a big deal because they are not making a big deal about it."

The Langstons' decision to involve Ryan in modeling was never about the money, Amanda said. "This has just become his own thing," she said. And it's also turned into a confidence booster.

German Women’s Magazine Will Use Only Amateur Models

Posted by Minnesotastan in Fashion on January 10, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Franca Cuneo poses on Capri. In real life, the 28-year-old is a restaurateur in Hamburg.

Brigitte, a German fashion magazine, has announced that it will no longer employ professional models for its fashion shoots.

But something about the photos looks different. A prominent tummy here and noticeable wrinkles there reveal that these are not size-zero Amazons straight from the catwalk, but real women. As of the January issue, which hit the newsstands Saturday, Brigitte will use only amateur models in its fashion shoots.

The public response has been overwhelmingly favorable, including thousands of applications from potential models.  The German press has been more skeptical, noting that the models chosen to date may be amateurs, but they still “correspond to the conventional ideas of beauty,” suggesting that the entire enterprise is a publicity stunt.

Japanese artist Fumie Sasabuchi takes photos of glam models straight
from the pages of fashion magazines and turn them into … zombies! Ironically, by doing so, she made the photos far more interesting than the original. Link | More at Artnet and ZINK blog – via Notcot
