Artist Joe Dragt’s medium of choice is the humble outdated circuit board. It’s a great way to reinject value into something that otherwise may have been thrown away. The paintings work surprisingly well as a backdrop for the organic subjects he uses.

This Simpsons mosaic table is made of leftover tiles and places from a Target clearance sale and leftovers at the local home improvement store by craftster user redflag. She completely freehanded the pictures, which is pretty impressive. I like how suspicious Moe and Mr. Burns look.

The flea circus sounds funny, but it was once a serious (if strange) performance type. The fleas are actually trained to ‘behave’ and ‘perform’ in certain ways – even harnassed with tiny wires. Of course, for every such sensation there are its detractors – and perhaps with good reason. In this day and age, there are some who say that a flea circus constitutes animal cruelty. Either way, these images and this history are amazing.

A flea, with legs finer than a human hair, can pull up to 700 times its own weight! A flea can lift up to 60 times its own weight! A flea can jump over 150 times its own height! When we build circuses on Mars, or asteroids one day, then we’ll perhaps witness similar dexterity, but for now – consider a humble flea:

French Performance Art outfit La Machine unveiled this 3 million dollar steampunk spider, La Princesse, as part of the City of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Over a four day period, La Princesse – in search of a nest – climbed walls, stalked the streets and sprayed unwary citizens.  This huge construction (here seen in some wonderful pictures) was deemed a huge success – but possibly not by any resident arachnaphobes.

This is in fact a massive thirty six tonne hydraulic spider scaling the side of a city block in Liverpool, England. The city is of course best known for The Beatles. However, during its time as the European City of Culture visitors to one of its main railway stations, Lime Street, could have been forgiven for thinking that the city had been invaded by a different type of insect altogether.

There’s something delightfully fun about these semi-retro and slightly-sexist female merit badges created by Artist Mary Yeager.

My female merit badges illustrate female “rites of passage” as well as the myriad physical manipulations women undergo to achieve cultural ideals of beauty, such as weight watching, whether or not to shave or wear makeup, etc. I’ve created tiny replicas of female products, such as a birth control pill pack and a pregnancy test. The miniature scale and meticulous, hand-embroidered surfaces convey my impressions of growing up female in our culture.

This stunning sculpture is the work Jud Turner, it was created for the ‘Different Spokes’ sculpture show in 2008.

Jud used a combination of welded steel, some found objects and mixed media to create what he calls the ‘Bio Cycle.
