Blockbuster's Very Last Movie Rental

You might be surprised to learn that Blockbuster Video still has 300 stores. Or at least they had 300 stores, but they are no longer renting movies, and will presumably shut down as soon as the last rentals are returned. The company declared bankruptcy in 2010, and was bought by DISH Network in 2011.

Saturday was the final day for renting a Blockbuster video. As Hawaii is the westernmost time zone for Blockbuster outlets, the cameras were out to record the very last rental. It was, appropriately enough, the movie This Is The End. The happy store employees in the picture might have other jobs already lined up, or maybe they are just glad to bid their customers goodbye.

Now you can finally take that tiny membership card off your key ring. -via The A.V. Club

Interestingly, it appears that Internet connections are so slow in Alaska that the Blockbuster franchise(s) there are still profitable, and (for now) still open.
