What Is It? game 216

By Miss Cellania in What Is It on Mar 1, 2012 at 6:30 am

Once again, it’s time for our collaboration with the always amusing What Is It? Blog. Can you tell us what this thing is? Or make a wild guess?

Give us your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you’d like. Post no URLs or weblinks, as doing so will forfeit your entry. Two winners: the first correct guess and the funniest (albeit ultimately wrong) guess will win T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don’t include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

For a picture of this from a slightly different angle, check out the What Is It? Blog.

Update: the pictured object is an M15 Grenade Launcher Sight. The first commenter in with the correct answer was Berhard, who wins a t-shirt for his efforts! The t-shirt for the funniest answer goes to villaridge, who said it was “one of the many scale models that Gene Rodenberry had made whilst he was fine tuning what the Enterprise space ship would look like.” See additional pictures of the grenade launcher sight and the answers to the other mystery items of the week at the What Is It? blog!

Looks like a grenade launcher sight. Unfortunately the mounting plate/disc with its degree scale is missing. May be mounted on M1903 or M1 Garands for rifle grenades, or on 40mm M79 Grenade Launcher..

Looks to be some sort of miniture campfire crepe maker.

The knobs on the end are designed to slot between two rocks making up the campfire stone ring. The leveler is to ensure perfect balance so as to not spill any precious crepe batter, and the two screws inside the crepe pan most likely are designed to give the crepes eyes to create extra merriment during your French cuisine campfire cookoff.

It is a finger knocker that was used in mental hospitals during the 30s for treatment of OCD patients who showed signs of perfectionism. It would be strapped to a patient’s fingers and when they would try to level the bubble the disc would rotate and knock their fingers until they returned it to one side.

Does look like a military piece of equipment, so I guess it’s possible it’s a Grenade Launcher site, but it seems a bit elaborate for that purpose. M203 sights don’t have a level.

That empty space looks just right to snap in an lensatic compass. The leveling feature makes me think it was probably used by Forward Observers for the Field Artillery. Looks like a WWII – Vietnam era Army issue piece of equipment.

This is the little known third choice for Neo.
The blue pill would allow him to remain in the Matrix. The red pill will lead to his escape out of the Matrix and into the “real world”. By finding and breaking out the rare yellow/green pill, both worlds will be “level” in his mind thereby making the blue and red pills null and void.

Its an assembly of stamped metal pieces, now oxidized, with tabs and flanges to secure it to a larger assembly. Integrated into the piece are a tubular glass bubble level and at least two slot head screw fasteners.
