Here’s a clever ad that UNICEF put out a few years ago to raise funds for people who have been maimed by landmines. Stickers, camouflaged to look like pavement, were left on sidewalks. When someone steps on one, it sticks to the bottom of his/her shoe. The underside informs the victim that if it had been a landmine, s/he would have been mutilated.

Ich…This simply reeks of “Concept”.
How many of us would feel enlightened about the horror of landmines after peeling off a crudded up sicker from our shoe? How many of us would even both to try and read it after walking on it all day?
This is what ad reps come up with to win awards.

Yeah all that would teach me is that UNICEF has too much money. They’d do better with a sign that said “Imagine what your life would be like if that gum on your shoe had blown it off instead.” Then at least they wouldn’t be actively pissing me off.

I think it’s a cool idea. The stickers look like they’d come off pretty easily, and it wouldn’t be beneficial to UNICEF if they just got all nasty and gummed up. Plus they’re huge, you’d be pretty oblivious not to notice that right away.
And if you actually read the ad, it said that the stickers were placed in front of donation booths, and that their donations rate increased… so, not really a waste of money… (and even if it didn’t increase their donations, at least they’re informing otherwise oblivious people about the tragedies that happen in many countries…)
