Cat Summoned for Jury Duty, Not Excused for Being a Cat

By Alex in Animals & Pets, Crime & Law on Jan 19, 2011 at 12:10 am

Boy, it’s hard to get a good jury these days. Everyone wants out of jury duty – so what’s a court to do? Why not call a cat to sit on a jury?

Here’s what happened:

Boston resident Sal Esposito has been called to jury duty, but there’s one thing standing in the way of his ability to serve: He’s a cat.

Massachusetts couple Anna and Guy Esposito received a jury duty summons for their feline friend this month, who they had listed as a household resident on the 2010 Census.

"Sal is a member of the family so I listed him on the last Census form under pets but there has clearly been a mix-up," Anna told local TV station WHDH. "I read the whole thing and I said, ‘Oh my God, how could he go, he’s a cat?’"

"I was shocked," added Anna’s husband Guy, though he said Sal – a fan of crime shows – "knows right and wrong."

Okay, so that’s funny – but what follows is even better: the court rejected Anna’s petition to excuse the cat from jury duty! Link (Photo: WHDH-TV)

Still? Wasn’t he summoned a year ago? Even the link from the article’s excerpt is a year old.

    Dear Interwebs,

THERE’S NO HEADER FOR “PETS” ON THE CENSUS FORM

JURY POOLS ARE STATE-CONTROLLED AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CENSUS ANYWAY

THE ESPOSITOS ARE CLEARLY MORONS WHO AT SOME POINT LISTEN THEIR CAT AS A HUMAN BEING ON AN OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT

Please make this story go away. Thanks.

jury pools are usually based on registered voters. Someone was committing voter fraud and just got caught.

Not all states base their jury pools on voter registration lists. When I lived in California, I received a jury summons even though I wasn’t registered. I believe they use DMV records. Of course Massachusetts might indeed be a state in which voter records are the source, which would make this a very interesting situation.

Start ordering free samples in your pets names and you’ll be amazed what happens. One of my cats got a pre-approved credit card and a condom, and the other’s been getting samples of lotions and soaps from Dove for about 15+ years now.

Yeah, I was tempted to fill out the credit card application but didn’t think they’d accept “Pro Bono Exterminator” as a valid occupation.
