Shaun White’s Private Halfpipe

By Johnny Cat in Sports on Feb 15, 2010 at 6:49 pm

60 Minutes ran an interesting piece on Olympic snowboarding sensation Shaun White last night.  Informative as always, and full of facts about the athlete, the neatest part had to be near the beginning when he showed Bob Simon the halfpipe where he trains alone, and away from prying competitor eyes.  It’s a 500 foot pipe carved into ice near Silverton, Colorado.  The only way to get there is by helicopter.

Is it me, or does the intro guy have his fingers glued together? His hands seem to say “look down here” – creepy.

Only if all athletes at his level were so down to earth. What he does is amazing! I coached freestyle sking and if it wasn’t for guys like Shaun the sport of skiing would be off the map. He is also an amazing surfer! If he put his mind to it he could be on the WCT…with a ton of sun screen.

I found where it is supposed to be on Google Earth, However it looks as if it has been digitally removed.

    37’52’23.07 N 107’38’59.57 W

At an elevation of 11,655 ft.

I found this location based on landmarks surrounding it in the photos of it.
