Wanna-be pilots have Flight Simulator, Microsoft’s iconic computer game, but what about those who want to steer a cargo ship? Enter PlanetInAction’s "Ships", an online simulation that uses Google Earth to let you get in touch with your inner helmsman and steer your own fleet of ships from barges to the cruise ship Queen Mary 2.

I tried this -I can't make it crash -It glides right over the land - would be neat if I could knock over buildings and run over other boaters!

Wanna-be helmsmen can play Ship Simulator 2008 as well. Check it out; the graphics are fantastic.

Glad you posted that Matt. Was going to mention it myself. Never played it myself.

There's also boats you can get for Flightsim. I remember tearing around the water near Meigs in a Coast Guard vessel. Good times:)

I'm a 3rd mate on an oil tanker in real life, while the game is fun, I figured the controls would be similar to what there is on ships in real life, like the flight simulator. Unfortunately the controls for a 1500 foot cruise ship in the game are approximately what you would find on a 10 foot powerboat. Also the reaction times for the engines aren't factored in at all, unlike a powerboat when you move the throttle, there is an instantaneous reaction, on a ship it can take a minute or more for the engine to react and then even more time for the vessel to actualy respond to engine.

I know I am ruining all your fun! sorry...
