Pilot Lands Plane With One Wing

By Queuebot in Video Clips on Apr 12, 2009 at 2:32 pm

To the horror of spectators, this stunt plane begins to tailspin toward the ground when it loses its right wing in midair.  Amazingly, at the last second the pilot is able to land safely.

Even without looking at the flawed physics in this video the plane sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s a rather crudely put together fake video…”amazingly” indeed.

Fake as a 3 dollar bill.

I watched this video perhaps a dozen times, trying to see any sign that it is fake. I’d love to hear details from those that think it s fake – please tell me what you see!

Notice how the missing wing is away from the camera when the plane is stopped. Other shots look like a model… I’ve seen this in much higher resolution. Consensus: Fake!

this made the rounds a year ago. why is it still being posted? It was proved to be a hoax – it was a marketing stunt (with an RC airplane) for a german company. This is really old news…

the totally nonsensical physics would be the giveaway.

Oh that and the snopes entry obviously.

Hole In The Donut, notice for instance how the plane stops on a dime even though it has momentum enough to carry on for quite some distance? That’s a telltale sign that it’s extremely fake. It’s like the plane has no mass whatsoever.

Also, notice with what relative ease the pilot is controlling the plane the split second before it lands.

When it lands you can see clearly that it’s a 3d model, the compositing is not done convincingly, the lighting is off, the materials are off. Not to mention the out of focus parts doesn’t look like camera blurryness, it looks like it was made in post.

I could probably dissect it further, but I think you get the idea. It may be convincing to people who have no idea what they’re looking at or who can’t see the obvious telltale signs of something not being real.

FAKE! you can see it’s fake because the shadows are all wrong. but seriously, this is poor

“All a y’all are party poopers”

Perhaps Snopes could figure out what language that is?

craig is correct….a viral marketing campaign that uses both large scale r/c models and CG. notice how the camera pans along with the plane as it lands? that would only be possible if the cameraman could run 50 mph AND hold a camera relatively steady. nice try.

I believe the landing tells all.

Whay can’t fake be neat? I say it’s fake and neat.

Aside from the bad quality of the special effects, a real airplane, having lost its right wing, would spin in the opposite direction than the little plane in this video spins.

Yeah, how did this relic fakeness get promoted to the front page?

  19. Mr. Binky
    Apr 12th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I would say the “Where’s his right wing?” acting also gave away the fakeness.

When did Snopes start getting so many popups?

So fake that I’m embarrassed for even having seen it posted to this site.

Wow! You guys are rough. I was just trying to find some interesting stuff to post. Next time, I’ll check Snopes first – probably should have thought of that before. Guess I’m just not as much of an expert on physics and video production as the rest of you. But at least it generated an interesting discussion. Thanks for all your comments and explanations.

altough fake, those stunt planes have so much power that they can do helicoptor like tricks. havent seen it before, nice vid.

I like how the cameraman can’t keep the thing in frame to save his life until the last 10 seconds. Righttt.
