South Koreans Love Eggs?

Posted by Anita in Baby & Kids, Video Clips on July 12, 2007 at 8:48 pm

I love you egg

I really can’t figure out this I Love Egg Song. It’s quite bizarre, but cute at the same time. A friend told me that the animation was created for a South Korean company that sells goofy little Egg dolls. Does anyone know more about these eggs?

Thanks Rico!

Really high-speed internet.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Everything Else on July 12, 2007 at 6:43 pm

150_comp.jpg75-year-old Sigbritt Löthberg of Sweden has the world’s fastest internet connection. She can receive information at 40 gigabytes per second, allowing her to receive 1500 high-definition TV signals at once, and download an entire DVD in two seconds. Löthberg never had a computer before now. She was the recipient of the setup because her son is Swedish internet legend Peter Löthberg.

“This is more than just a demonstration,” said network boss Hafsteinn Jonsson.

“As a network owner we’re trying to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections. And Peter Löthberg wanted to show how you can build a low price, high capacity line over long distances,” he told The Local.

They wanted to prove that fiber technology makes such connections commercially viable.

“The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt’s PC,” said Jonsson.

The Rota Period.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science & Tech on July 12, 2007 at 5:56 pm

rota-period-1.pngrota-period-2.png
Jim Rota took the standard periodic table of the elements and broke it into 12 columns to make it easier to understand.

There are several unique structural things about the Rota Period that make it easy to understand and use:

1. It uses 12 columns (groups).
2. The 5+, 6+, 7+, and 8+ elements are not classified into groups V, VI, VII and VIII (or IUPAC 5, 6, 7, 8). This gives these elements their own unique position in the periodic table.
3. It uses the horizontal and vertical of the page to displace elements. This allows ALL elements to have a unique position (if/when necessary).
4. It is based upon showing valences, not orbitals.

Which makes it easier to understand if you know more about chemistry than I do. He sent this in response to my humor post about chemistry at Miss Cellania, but I knew it would find a wider audience here. Link -Thanks, Jim!

Water Found in Planet Outside of Solar System

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on July 12, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Scientists reported the first discovery of water in a planet outside of our Solar System:

The planet was discovered in 2005 as it dimmed the light of its parent star by some three percent when transiting in front of it. Using Spitzer, Tinetti and the team observed the star, which is slightly fainter than the Sun. They watched its starlight dim at two infrared bands (3.6 and 5.8 micrometres). [...]

“Water is the only molecule that can explain that behaviour,” says Tinetti.

The presence of water vapour does not necessarily make it a good candidate in the search for planets that harbour life. “This is a far from habitable world,” she adds.

Cars That Became Metaphors

Posted by Alex in Auto & Transportation on July 12, 2007 at 2:33 pm

mental_floss has a neat article on 5 cars that became metaphors, whether deserved or not. Like this one:

4. Dolorean = Overhyped
The DeLorean has such a wild story that it became more than one metaphor. Built from 1981 to 1983, it was the dream project of John Z. DeLorean. A Detroit native and engineer and executive at GM, DeLorean founded the DeLorean Motor Company with the help of high-profile investors and huge financial incentives to build his factory in Northern Ireland. Only 3,000 of the strange-looking and expensive car sold the first year, nowhere near DeLorean’s projections. Trying to pull the company out of British goverenment receivership, DeLorean became involved in a cocaine-smuggling scheme and was arrested in 1982. He was eventually found not guilty due to entrapment, but the damage to his reputation, and to his car, was already done.

Reduce Global Warming by Making Cows Burp Less

Posted by Alex in Animals & Pets, Science & Tech on July 12, 2007 at 2:20 pm

Forget reducing energy consumption of your mansion and private jet – here’s the key to reduce global warming:

Using modern plant-breeding methods to find new diets for cows that make them belch less is a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, scientists reported this week.

He noted the average dairy cow belches out about 100 to 200 litres of methane each day, making diet changes a key potential factor in reducing this greenhouse gas.

"There is a common misperception about how methane gets into the atmosphere," he said. "It is actually through belching rather than the other end."

Ugandan Pastor Gets Caught, Denies Using Machine to Shock Congregation

Posted by TheGoodReverend in Everything Else on July 12, 2007 at 11:31 am

Kojo Nana Obiri-Yeboah, the Nikola Tesla of the Ugandan religious scene, was caught importing a portable electric shock machine he may have planned to use to convince his congregation he had supernatural powers. He’s denying the whole thing:

There has been a massive growth in churches set up by charismatic preachers in Africa in recent years, amid fears some could be fraudsters.

The pastor told the BBC that during his prayers, members of the congregation “act as the spirit comes in them”.

The website of the company Yigal Mesika, which makes the “Electric Touch” machine, among other magic tricks, says: “Charge a spoon, keys or coins and watch as it shocks a volunteer!

“They will believe you have supernatural powers!”

Scale model of a hydrogen atom.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Science & Tech on July 12, 2007 at 8:28 am

A hydrogen atom is only about a ten millionth of a millimeter in diameter, but the proton in the middle is a hundred thousand times smaller, and the electron whizzing around the outside is a thousand times smaller than THAT. The rest of the atom is empty. I tried to picture it, and I couldn’t. So I put together this page – and I still can’t picture it.

The electron in this model is only one pixel. You’ll have to scroll to the right to see it. Link -via Dump Trumpet

Tesla’s Tower of Power.

Posted by Miss Cellania in Architecture, Science & Tech on July 12, 2007 at 8:23 am

Inventor Nikola Tesla had a dream: to build a tower to harness the electricity of the atmosphere, control the weather, and conduct long-distance wireless communications. Construction of the 187-foot-tall Wardenclyffe Tower in Shoreham, New York was started in 1901, with an investment by J.P. Morgan, but the project was never completed. 20th century technology may have been quite different if Tesla’s dream hadn’t run into so many financial problems. DDR Shenanigans

Posted by Alex in Sports, Video Clips, World Records on July 12, 2007 at 2:26 am

Dance Dance Revolution has been around for a long time – but I’ve just found out that there are actually many different "versions" of DDR. Check these out:

Just a friendly game of regular DDR – oh, I dunno, maybe easy level or something:

Link [YouTube]

Hard to stay on your feet? Maybe adding hands will help. Here’s Freestyle DDR done by a guy who goes by the nickname "smidget" (hm, that you Robert?):

Link [YouTube]

If you can’t do it, maybe it’s because you’ve got two left feet. The obvious solution is to try one-legged DDR:

Link [YouTube]

Still can’t do it? Maybe it’s because you need a partner, like the Japanese:

Link [YouTube]

… or the Koreans:

Link [YouTube]

All that jumping will probably induce a myocardial infarction in old, out of shape fat guys like me, so why not try something "easier" like finger DDR:

Link [YouTube] – Thanks wade7!

That reminded you of your carpal tunnel syndrome? Mad that you don’t have the skillz to play any of the DDR versions above? Feel like hulk-smashing something? You’re in luck:

Link [YouTube]

Now here’s something for me: Dance Freaks, where you flail to win! (Added 7/13/07 – Thanks Joe Felice!)

Link [YouTube]

Still can’t DDR? Maybe it’s a matter of motivation … Here’s something that will surely motivate the heck out of you: Dance Dance Immolation, where a wrong move is punished by a flamethrower! (Added 7/13/07 – Thanks Ed!) | Dance Dance Immolation website – Thanks Richaard!

Earthquake Risk … in Memphis?

Posted by Alex in Science & Tech on July 12, 2007 at 2:21 am

Unless you live in earthquake-prone California, you probably don’t think twice about earthquakes. But just because you don’t live on the west coast, that doesn’t mean you’re safe:

We may not be able to accurately predict earthquakes, but the USGS has determined that the locations most likely to suffer a large earthquake in the next 30 years are:

The New Madrid Zone:
Believe it or not, this 120 mile stretch following the Mississippi River created the largest earthquake ever recorded in the continental US. This was an estimated 8.1 (on the Richter scale) which is equivalent to the energy released with an explosion of 1 Billion tons of TNT. For comparison, the energy released in a small atomic bomb would be much smaller in size and be equivalent to a 4.0 on the Richter scale. Memphis and St. Louis are right on the zone, and large portions of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Southern Illinois are likely to be effected by a New Madrid Zone earthquake as well.

No Shirt, No Shoes, No Arms, No Service!

Posted by Alex in Crime & Law, Food & Drink on July 12, 2007 at 2:18 am

Although she was born with no arms, Dawn Larson has learned to lead a full life and can even drive using her feet. She’s never had any problem in public, until McDonald refused to serve her:

Normally, Larson first gives the cashier her debit card to pay for the order and then grabs the food and drink with both feet.

But at McDonald’s she said they took her money at one window but wouldn’t give her the food at the next window. Larson says she felt degraded.

"I reached my foot out the window to grab the food," says Larson. "She set the food down, raised her hands up really high in the air and slammed them down on the counter. This was like violently."

"’I am not doing this,’ she screamed that at me, ‘Absolutely not doin’ this.’"

The restaurant offered her a $10 gift certificate. She then contacted a lawyer and two months later experienced the same thing at a different Rockford McDonald’s.
