Poignant Portraits Of Retired Polish Clowns

(Images Via Rafal Milach)

The saying “once a clown, always a clown” aptly describes the art of clowning because it comes straight from the heart for those who see it as more than just an outfit to wear while twisting balloons.

For over 40 years those who wanted to study clowning in Poland went to the Julinek school, which operated like a giant circus in the middle of Kampinoski National Park. The park has been closed for over a decade now, and many of the clowns who once squeaked around the school are now retired as well.

Photographer Rafal Milach captures poignant portraits of these retired Polish clowns in their homes, and occasionally in the ruins of the school itself, in a series called "Disappearing Circus" which is full of raw emotion and just a touch of creepiness.

Super-Legit Totally Not Bootlegged Toys

What is it about bootleg toys, those wonderfully wrong and totally funky knockoffs, that makes them so appealing?

Is it the bizarre mashup universes they live in? Is it the crazy names the ripoff artists coin to make their cheap toys appeal to kids looking for the real thing? Is it the fact that in the world of the knockoff it doesn't matter if ninja turtles ride horses or Sith lords act as galaxy cops?

Whatever the appeal bootleg toys are fun to look at, cheap to buy, and always full of hilariously strange elements worthy of a chuckle or two, like naming a toy robot "God Jesus" or the name Batman emblazoned across a package that clearly contains a Superman figure.

Check out these Super Legit Totally Not Bootlegged Toys, brought to you by The Soup.

Remember 1988 - A Fun Look Back At 80s Pop Culture

(Video Link)

1988 was a fun year to be alive and over five- great movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Young Guns and Big came out in theaters, musical acts like Morrissey and INXS released iconic albums, Garfield and Friends and Kevin Arnold's Wonder Years were on the small screen, and video games just kept getting better in terms of graphics quality and gameplay.

Nerd out on the year 1988 in this pop culture compilation video created by Simon Peterson called Remember 1988, the latest in a long string of Remember videos Simon has created that fill you in on the important stuff if you weren't alive or aware, and give you a healthy dose of nostalgia if you remember the 80s fondly.

Ten Authors Who Have Disowned Their Own Books

In a perfect world an author would adore every book they'd ever written, but when there are books in their publishing past written simply for a paycheck, or books that contain elements they no longer want to see in print, even the proudest writer is inclined to disown a story or three.

Did you know Anthony Burgess says A Clockwork Orange is "A novel I am prepared to repudiate", or that Stephen King successfully got his Richard Bachman novel Rage pulled from store shelves so it doesn't inspire kids to shoot up schools?

io9 has put together a collection of 10 Great Authors Who Disowned Their Own Books, which is a must read for anyone curious about which books famous authors didn't want you to read!

Deliciously Cute Skull And Candy Assemblages

The assemblage works of Cristina Burns are guaranteed to be the cutest skeleton based art photos you’ll see all day, unless you subscribe to a site called Cuddly Calaveras, in which case you’ve seen enough cute skulls to last a lifetime!

The Italian artist and photographer has a knack for combining cute and morbid visual elements in a manner pleasing to the eye and appealing to the tastebuds of sugarholics like myself.

Cristina's brightly colored candy and skull assemblages would look right at home on the ofrenda table during Dia de los Muertos, and the usage of fresh flowers, candy and plastic skeleton parts makes for a fun photo series with an infinite number of comical and colorful combinations.

Disney's New 3D Printing Technology Turns Any Object Into A Speaker

3D printing has reached a point where people are looking to do more than just print things in plastic, so we now have food printers, doctors are printing out bones, and most recently a technology developed by Disney Research interaction designer Ivan Poupyrev that turns any object into a speaker. Here’s how it works:

Technically, this means that any object around us would be able to “talk”

To apply this technology, we have to thread a wire that carries an “electrical impulse of sound” through the object, before covering it with electrodes in order to charge “its skin with the potential to create sound”.

Ivan’s advancement could lead to some incredibly immersive experiences, like the ability to cover entire surfaces of walls and objects with speakers, or turning fashion accessories into mini speakers so you can share your favorite tunes with the world.

The Nerdiest Explanation For The Lack Of Female Star Wars Characters

Many women are up in arms about the lack of characters in the world of Star Wars, in other words they’re looking for geeky icons of their own and coming up short, which is a fair point.

This used to be explained away with sales, stating that it was simply a matter of marketing towards a target audience, but nowadays there’s really no excuse not to include female characters in sci-fi franchises like Star Wars.

The discussion has been re-kindled by the casting announcement for Star Wars Episode VII, which only included one female character, and that has caused people to revisit the strange Star Wars theory set out last Octoer by author Matthew Gladstone last October dubbed the Hive Theory.

Short explanation: There are no humans in Star Wars.

This Is What Tattooing Looks Like In Slow Motion

(Video Link)

Tattoos can look amazing when they're done right, look like a train wreck when the gun is handed to an unskilled amateur, and they’re meant to last forever so whether you regret them or not, grow out of them or never stop loving your ink, they’re always going to be with you.

Tattooing is a process by which ink is punched into the skin with a needle hundreds, if not thousands, of times, and when you watch a tattoo being created in slow motion it may send shivers down your spine.

Tattoo artists GueT Deep created this slo-mo video showing a tattoo being applied to the skin, one agonizingly slow needle slam at a time.

Good Samaritan Turns Trash Into Mobile Homes For The Homeless

(Images by Brian J. Reynolds)

Recycling is a good act in itself, at least as far as the planet is concerned, so when you use recycled materials to construct cute little portable houses for the homeless does that make it the totally best thing ever done with recyclable waste?

Kind-hearted builder Gregory Kloehn definitely thinks so, and his Homeless Homes project is providing cool little mobile domiciles to homeless people in Oakland, California, which he creates using materials gathered while dumpster-diving in industrial neighborhoods.

Gregory’s custom homes are around the size of a sofa, and they all come on wheels with a charming look that often retains the look and texture of the source material.

Breakdancing Monks Show Off Their Skills For MCA-DAY

(Image Via KNARF New York)

(Video Link)

Breakdancing is really hard for people to learn who are used to counting their steps and holding their partners hands, but when you’re a Buddhist monk who has spent his life studying martial arts, and keeping your body in peak physical condition, breakdancing sorta comes naturally.

The monks in this video aren’t actually Buddhist monks, but they bust out with some impressive b-boy skills nevertheless, showing mad love for the fallen Beastie Boy MCA (Adam Yauch) who died on May 4, 2012.

May 4th has become an unofficial holiday in New York called MCA-DAY, and last year a park in Brooklyn Heights was dedicated to Yauch, but this year's breakdancing monk-stravaganza seems a more fitting tribute to MCA, who was a practicing Buddhist.

Dizzying Optical Illusion Freestyle Bike Course

(Image Via Marv Watson/Red Bull Content Pool)

(Video Link)

Freestyle bike courses can be long and rampy, or full of crazy ledges and mini-ramps packed into a tighter, faster space, but when you add an optical illusion paint job you’ve got a freestyle bike course that looks like a dizzying level from a video game.

This mind boggling 3D illusion course was created by Red Bull, and fixed gear freestyle rider Josh Boothby was chosen to ride on this course that doesn't look quite as crazy from the ground, but when it's viewed through a camera lens 30 feet above the course it looks like Josh is riding through the most maddening Marble Madness level ever created.
