The Best Way To Ask Strangers For A Favor, According To Reddit Data

Reddit is home to a delicious subreddit called Random Acts of Pizza, where redditors try to convince others to send them a pizza by using tactics which range from “me hungry” to “won’t you take pity on a poor, starving student?”.

Tim Althoff, a researcher from Stanford University,  compiled data from the over 21,000 posts on the subreddit and discovered some constants to the whole idea of asking for something, a discovery about the best way to ask strangers for a favor, according to factors such as need and your station in life.

They discovered that about 70% of the time the best requests had these factors in common:

  • Demonstrated a strong need for the pizza (job or money issues, helping a family)
  • Said they'd pay the favor back or pay it forward
  • Had a high status in the community (Reddit Karma points and previous posts in Random Acts of Pizza)

So the next time you need a favor from a stranger keep these factors in mind and you may just come out with a slice of the pie!

Can You Get Drunk By Drinking The Blood Of Someone Who's Drunk?

Vampires are supposedly vulnerable to a few human conditions when they drink our blood, namely the effects of drugs and alcohol coursing through the bloodstream, but can you really get drunk by drinking a drunk person’s blood?

Surely there are some vampires out there who claim they get drunk from feeding on barflies, but the line between LARPing and real life has blurred for these folks, because according to research by Randall Munroe, creator of xkcd, you can’t get drunk simply by slurping on some sot’s vein sauce.

Here's what Randall has to say on the topic:

You wouldn’t throw up because because of the alcohol; you’d just throw up because you’re drinking blood. If you somehow avoided vomiting, you would have ingested a total of 2 grams of ethanol, which is the amount you’d get from one shot glass full of beer.

So the next time your buddy from Clan Brujah claims he’s been hitting the sauce inside Sammy lay this reality hammer down on him and make him question his motives for vampirism.

Visualizations Of People Lost In A Daydream

There are times when even the sharpest, most alert mind is lost in the haze of a daydream, and when that happens a single, constant thought is replaced with many smaller, more fleeting thoughts that seem to be floating around inside the daydreamer’s mind.

Photographer Cerise Doucède captures images of people who appear to be daydreaming, and then he adds the dreamlike floating elements to complete the scene, the trappings of their individual lives dancing around them like pink elephants parading around a drunk.

His series is entitled Égarements (brainstorm), and each playful image evokes concepts of ideas come to life, visualization of thought and the different things we each have running through our minds on a daily basis.

X-Mans - Art Inspired By A Horrible X-Men Coloring Book

Spider-Man, Superman, Batman and many more have found themselves depowered and disgraced by the terrible merchandise that comes out with their name plastered all over it, and in the 90s when the X-Men cartoons were taking the after school world by storm there were all kinds of bunk X-Men based products being released.

One particular bad product, a horrible X-Men coloring book full of terrible quality drawings and mutants placed in strange situations that seem to have very little to do with superheroing, has inspired a series of artworks based on what the artists found between the covers of that cheesy coloring book.

X-Mans finds Brandon Bird, and some of his more artistic friends, drawing interpretation from this travesty of a coloring book, and their artistic interpretations are simply priceless!

Miniature Wildlife Masterpieces Painted On Turkey Feathers

Feathers are beautiful in their own right, like little delicate sprays of color that come straight from the bird, but when an artist has decided to create their work on a specific surface the whole “but the feather is already colorful” argument goes right out the window.

Wildlife artist Brenda Lyons is one of those people who believes not every painting belongs on a canvas, and her fantastic miniature paintings in her appropriately titled series Painted Feathers each reside on the side of moulted turkey feathers.

Brenda's paintings really capture the spirit of each animal, and her delightful paintings of fantasy creatures like the phoenix and pegasus fit right in with the rest so well you almost forget they're mythical!

Millionaire Hides Cash Around San Francisco To Be Found Via Twitter

There’s a new superhero in San Francisco who is creating quite a stir by “donating” hundred dollar bills to whoever finds them by following the clues left on Twitter.

Their Twitter account Hidden Cash provides the clues necessary for finding the cash, which is hidden somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the whole thing is open to whoever would like to take part in this bold social experiment with cash prizes.

There’s a lot of speculation around who this mysterious benefactor actually is, but according to an interview with the Bold Italic they’re a real estate mogul who has made millions from the Bay Area housing market and just wants to give back to society, and they’re planning to hold a “huge giveaway” once they reach 100,000 Twitter followers. Miniature Disaster Scene Dioramas By Lori Nix

There are those who would run as far away from a disaster scene as possible, those who would run in to see who they can help, and then there’s Lori Nix, who creates disaster scenes that spring straight from her imagination then she takes pictures of the destruction.

Her super detailed dioramas look like sets from an apocalyptic Rankin-Bass stop motion movie they never got around to making, and her photos of each piece really make you feel like you’re right in the heart of the destruction, a survivor waiting to see what happens when you venture outside.

Those who are curious about Lori's creation process should visit her blog My 8X10 Life, where she demystifies her process and shares some helpful tips with budding diorama builders.

Animated Short Created To Raise Awareness About Human Trafficking

(Video Link)

Peril and adventure are the cornerstones of many animated films, since they're great plot devices for driving the main characters towards their fate, but when your animated production deals with real life dangers, and the adventure of surviving in a world where your body is seen as a commodity, there's no room for fictional danger.

A Dangerous Journey is an animated short created with a positive purpose in mind- to warn young African women about sex trafficking, and teach them how to protect themselves from becoming exploited by those who see them as nothing more than a way to make a buck.

It was created by Animage Films, partially funded by Comic Relief, and is narrated by two survivors of sex trafficking in Africa. It's poignant, beautifully animated, and hopefully it will help raise awareness about the real life dangers of human trafficking.

Fifteen Fascinating Facts About Wolfenstein 3D

There was once a little WWII game called Castle Wolfenstein, which made its first appearance on the Apple II as a stealth game, but is best known for its later first-person shooter incarnation put out by the makers of Doom, id Software.

Did you know they actually "borrowed" the name from the original creators of Wolfenstein, Muse Games? And speaking of Doom, did you know that the original idea for Castle Wolfenstein was called It's Green and Pissed, which later became the basis for the wildly popular game Doom?

You may have played through the original incarnations, kept up with the latest versions and now eagerly await the release of Wolfenstein: The New Order, but as this fact filled list from Gamma Squad shows there is a lot you don’t know about Wolfenstein.

There's No Business Quite Like The Ethel Merman Disco Album

(Video Link)

(Video Link)

She had a voice that either made people grin or cringe, a hugely successful name and was called "The First Lady of the musical comedy stage", but Ethel Merman went from being a beloved and appreciated star of stage and screen to a punchline, and it’s sad to say that one particular album played a major role in her fall from grace.

The project which changed the way people thought about Ethel Merman as an entertainer is the uniquely horrible and utterly ridiculous album called The Ethel Merman Disco Album, and it’s every bit as bad as it sounds.

Listen, if you dare, to a 71-year-old belter of standards and Broadway tunes singing over a cheesy disco track, and try not to tap your foot along to the beat!

Giant Realistic Looking Flowers Made Out Of Glass

These beautiful orchids and carnivorous plants are extremely realistic looking and totally photo ready, but they’re not made from plant based mediums like paper or cloth, they’re made with blown glass.

Seattle based master glassblower Jason Gamrath creates these breakable blooms on a scale meant to make the viewer feel small in comparison, a scale he hopes will reveal to the viewer that even the most miniscule plant is beautiful when viewed up close.

Here's what Jason has to say about his glass works:

“The purpose of creating this series on a macro scale is to bring to light the beauty that exists within the micro scale of nature,” he explains. “Small plants, although minuscule in comparison to our human-sized way of existing, are overwhelmingly perplexing when held inches away from one’s face.”

“It is my hope that when people admire my large-scale renderings, they become curious and captivated by the hints of realism I incorporate into my designs,”

A Bad Lip Reading Of American Idol

(Video Link)

The contestants who make it onto the American Idol big stage are often very excited to be there, and a bit nervous, so the song lyrics aren’t always totally intelligible when belted out by those amateur performers.

If you think the words are hard to understand when a contestant sings them imagine how confused things can become when a bad lip reader applies their questionable skills to an American Idol performance- the whole thing becomes a big "Sing-Song Contest Of America".

This ridiculous video is way more entertaining than watching an actual performance on American Idol these days, maybe they should hire a bad lip reader of their own?
