Fifteen Fun Facts About Time Bandits

Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam's masterpiece Time Bandits is one of those movies I loved as a kid even though I didn't totally get the film, and just like the kids who attended the test screening I liked one part the most- "the parents being blown up!".

Nearly three and a half decades later I've seen Time Bandits dozens of times and still find something to love with every new viewing, and I appreciate the amazing performances now more than ever.

The Time Bandits themselves are played by little people with huge personalities, so it's easy to see how their roles could be inspired by their real life attitudes.

But Ralph Richardson's personality changed a bit as he played The Supreme Being, a role he took so seriously that he submitted his own red ink edits complete with message "God wouldn't say that".

There were more than enough talented actors cast in Time Bandits, but none proved more important to the final look of the film than Sean Connery.

He helped guide Gilliam's directing on the first day of shooting, and he came up with that fun bit at the end where he plays the firefighter. Is there anything Sean Connery can't do?

Chinese Man With Terminal Cancer Marries His Sex Doll

Ever since companies like Real Doll started making "companionship" dolls that actually look lifelike people (mostly men) have been doing some mighty strange things with them, and not necessarily in a naughty way.

Some men see their realistic "companionship" dolls as a surrogate life partner, a female figure that makes them feel less lonely, and these guys have given up on the dating game in favor of life with lifelike replica.

These dolls are big with unmarried men in China, where one guy recently did the strangest and yet somehow sanest thing with his doll- he married (her?) it.

The unidentified 28-year-old man was reportedly diagnosed with terminal cancer and didn't want to leave a living widow behind, so he married his doll in a ceremony complete with dress changes and posed wedding photos.

Some are theorizing it's nothing but a marketing campaign, and yet the story doesn't seem any more far fetched than what you read about guys and their dolls online nowadays, so why fake it when someone's bound to be in to the idea?

Unbelievable Urban Legends That Happen To Be True

Most urban legends begin with a true story, and as the story is then modified, reinterpreted and exaggerated the fantastic fictionalized "truth" starts to overshadow the dark truth at the heart of the tale.

The tale of a killer hiding out in the attic of a house for weeks before murdering the inhabitants sounds like a work of horror fiction, but this incident actually occurred on the Hinterkaifeck farm in Germany back in 1922.

While the tale of a murderer hiding out for weeks may sound far fetched the mere idea of someone dying as a result of receiving an atomic wedgie seems like pure schoolyard fantasy.

But once again the tale is true, only the poor boy was a 58-year-old man who received an atomic wedgie from his drunk stepson, and he was choked to death by the underwear's elastic waistband.

Bill Nye Is Photoshopped Into The Ultimate Science Badass

Bill Nye is undoubtedly the science guy, and he'll forever be known for his scientifically stupendous TV show that introduced many young minds to the might of science, but he's not really known for being a badass.

I mean that in the very best way possible, of course, because he's a man of science and truly has no need to go around blowing up cars or punching people into submission like a stereotypical badass.

But Redditor Chipper_chap wanted to see how badass Bill Nye could become with a little help from Photoshop, so he started a PsBattle by posting the pic above entitled "Perplexed Bill Nye".

Soon that hard bitten science man was walking down all kinds of dark roads, setting science aside long enough to star in far bloodier TV shows and record a gangsta rap album.

Movies That Used Recycled Footage From Other Films

It's easy to believe that every new movie is made out of footage shot solely for the film, especially big budget movies like Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, Star Trek: Generations and Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones.

But even big budget blockbuster movies like these can contain recycled footage, thrown in to save time, reduce cost or help finish off the filmmaker's vision.

Screen Rant revealed six famous films that incorporated recycled footage into their final cut, and if you can look past a typo that dubs Kubrick's classic film "The Shinning" you'll discover how Hollywood serves up a rehashed scene.

Nigerians Are Building Homes Out Of Recycled Plastic Bottles

The proud people who call Nigeria home have dealt with more than their fair share of problems on their way to becoming the "Giant Of Africa", but this struggle has taught them some serious survival skills.

When faced with a housing crisis the Nigerian people learned how to build homes out of recycled materials found in abundance at the local dumps, and now they use plastic bottles to build much better homes for themselves.

Plastic beverage bottles filled with sand are held together with mud and cement to form the structure for an eco-friendly and affordable home that is fireproof, bulletproof, and naturally insulated.

These bottle houses can be built up to three stories in height, and a two bedroom house requires over 14,000 bottles to complete, which is a fraction of the 3 million bottles Nigerians throw away every day.

An Epic Scale Stop Motion Battle - Godzilla Versus Jason

Godzilla has racked up a massive body count over the years, even though we don't actually see most of his kills on film, and yet most would consider Jason Voorhees to be a more prolific killer.

But when the fate of his human prey is in jeopardy, can Jason Voorhees kill the seemingly unkillable king of kaiju Godzilla?

Adult Swim's totally spectacular stop motion animation supershow Robot Chicken attempted to answer this question with a stop motion quickie called Godzilla Vs. Jason. (Contains NSFW language)

Six-Year-Old Metalhead Performs The Most Brutal Mic Check Ever

Is it just me or are kids bigger metalheads these days than ever before?

It seems like more and more kids are trading in their Sesame Street t-shirts and Kids Bop albums for Black Sabbath on vinyl and Slayer concert tees.

One extremely hardcore 6-year-old made it on to Skeletonwitch's Facebook page with her totally brutal mic check, and her growling was so fierce it sent shivers down the spine of the band's lead singer Chance.

Will this young lady become the next mighty maiden of metal, or is this video by Fuglymaniacs the last we'll ever see of this hardcore cutie?

Well, she made at least one more appearance on this video entitled Birth A.D. vs. 6 yr. old (skip to 0:42 to see her), and considering these videos were posted three years ago she has most likely moved on to bigger and better things- like the fourth grade!

Man Takes Selfie With Goat, Internet Cares More About His Eyebrows

Taking a selfie with a goat seems like no big deal nowadays, because people take selfies with celebs like Kimye and Iggy Azalea all the time, which is pretty much the same thing.

But one funny faced fellow took a selfie with a goat and captured the attention of the interwebs- with his eyebrows.

A young Redditor named chirv went for a run down the road when his neighbor's pet goat decided to tag along, but the goat wasn't trying to get fit- it was mesermized by chirv's fabulous tufts of over eye hair.

Redditors naturally went a bit Photoshop crazy with the lad's selfie, and after moving the brows around a bit and messing with the local goat population numbers the selfie 'shopping reached this inevitable conclusion:

Sometimes People's Pinkie Toes Fall Off And Nobody Knows Why

If someone told you their toes just sorta fell off one day and they have no idea why you'd probably assume they're either insane or high, but they may actually be the victim of dactylolysis spontanea.

It's an extremely rare form of autoamputation, meaning your body has decided to "shed" a limb, or in this case a toe, and it sounds like something you'd see on a sci-fi show like the Twilight Zone.

A Brazilian doctor named Silva Lima was one of the first to make note of this strange occurrence back in 1867, and even though multiple incidents have been recorded since there are still no answers as to why it occurs.

Here's what the process of losing toes to dactylolysis spontanea is like:

First a little band of tough tissue forms around the base of the pinkie toe. Usually, the band forms on each pinkie toe, because why not have horror be symmetrical? Eventually the band gets smaller and tighter, and the toe swells up. The toe, naturally, hurts, but there is nothing amiss with the rest of the person. They get to watch as the “band” gets narrower and tighter, breaking the bones in the toe as it constricts. The toe ends up hanging by a “pedicle,” a tiny bit of tissue and bone. Eventually, even that gives up the ghost and the toe drops off.

Medical science still can't explain this strange disease, and all they can say for sure is that it happens to people of African descent and those who live in the tropics more than anyone else. So count your blessings if you can still count all ten of your toes!

Symbols Which Have Lost Their True Meaning Over Time

We're taught to look for hidden meaning in some symbols, a search we can't give up once it has begun, but some symbols are simply too vexing or arcane to understand.

And then there are those symbols that seem to have hidden meaning but actually mean whatever you'd like them to mean, such as the fleur-de-lis, asterisk or looped square.

These symbols are often seen as iconic and powerful because of the organizations they're associated with, like the looped square and Apple computers or the fleur-de-lis and the Boy Scouts, but their true meaning is mostly lost to time.

Like the symbols themselves, you shouldn't take this mental_floss article 4 Symbols Without Actual Meanings at face value, because these symbols actually have more than one meaning, depending on who you ask.

Young Man Interviews His Older Self 38 Years Later

It takes someone with an incredible knack for planning ahead to create a "self interview" video project then pick it up and finish it 38 years later, it takes someone like Peter "Stoney" Emshwiller.

Stoney (who should have won an award by now for his amazing name) shot a video at age 18 in which he interviews his older self, and then he played interviewee at age 56 and finished the "self interview" video 38 years in the making.

(YouTube Link)

Stoney recently received enough funding to go ahead with his "self interview" project and put the entire video together for all the world to see, and perhaps we'll see a sequel released when Stoney turns 94.

This Might Be The Most Realistic Rocket Raccoon Costume Ever Made

It's no surprise that Rocket Raccoon is a big hit with the younger Guardians fans, since he's both spunky and fuzzy, but it seems their love for Rocket knows no bounds. They're wearing Rocket's image on their t-shirts, playing with his action figures, reading his comics and pretending to be him on Halloween.

But the kid in this pic might actually be turning in to Rocket in real life.

Oh wait, that's just a young human named Chase wearing an amazingly realistic costume his mom Christina Borchardt fabricated from scratch.

Christina says the suit isn't finished because she hasn't distressed the leather on the pants yet, but I don't think people are looking at the pants when that freakin' awesome Rocket face is grinning at them!

The Different Types Of Comic Book Readers

Comic book readers have such diverse opinions about the medium, and vary so widely in terms of commitment level, that it should be really hard to divide them up into categories.

And yet it seems that the 8 main types drawn up by Julia Lepetit describe most of the readers out there, especially when the types are combined into a new, improved super-reader-type.

There's the Museum Curator, who knows each issue's grade to the tenth; the Newbie, who has a hard time wrapping his mind around all the different worlds; and that maniacally geeky Researcher, who keeps all the alternate world stuff straight for the rest of us.

I'm a Collector-Groupie and occasional Lapsed Reader when I don't have the time or funds to keep up, what kind of reader are you?
