New Book Takes A Look At The Exploitation Movie Posters Of Yesteryear

Hollywood has been using exploitation films as money making vehicles since the very beginning, but the features we generally think of as exploitation films are those schlocky sci-fi and horror flicks shown in grindhouse theaters beginning in the 1960s.

These films set the precedent for shocking audiences with the use of sex, gore and rock n roll, and they also changed the face of that most important piece of print advertising- the movie poster.

Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Bronson, Drive and the upcoming Neon Demon, has been collecting exploitation movie posters for so long he doesn't know what to do with them all.

So when a friend suggested he share them with the world he decided the best way to do that would be with a book.

His upcoming book The Act Of Seeing will feature over 300 full color plates showing off those colorful early exploitation film posters in all their cheesy glory, with recaps and color commentary by journalist Alan Jones.

Sauron's Plan For The One Ring Made Easy To Understand

Sauron is the ultimate antagonist in the Lord Of The Rings series, aka the guy controlling that fiery floating eyeball atop the Dark Tower of Barad-Dur who keeps sending dark forces after our favorite little furry footed halflings, the Hobbits.

But behind that pyrotechnic peeper is a necromantic mastermind with a mighty malevolent plan to rule all of Middle Earth with a little help from the One Ring.

(YouTube Link)

YouTube champion CGP Grey continued his series on Middle Earth Mythology (the first installment of which Miss C. posted here on Neatorama) with this video entitled The One Ring Explained.

It's perfect for those who have watched the movies but haven't read the books, or those who simply can't stand reading when there are thousands of videos online that still need to be watched!

Mastiff Swimming Lessons

Mastiffs make effective guard dogs due to their massive size and deep barks, and their giant frames also make them ideal steeds for kids, but they're not generally know for their swimming skills.

(YouTube Link)

Some mastiffs can't even doggy paddle without swimming lessons, but as you can see in this video if you try and try again, and treat your mastiff like a big ol' baby, they'll get the hang of swimming with just a few lessons.

(YouTube Link)

You gotta give it to Sailor the mastiff for keeping a cool head, and his human Brad H is not only a calm and caring owner, he's also quite the doggy swimming instructor!

Ten Non-Food Related Uses For A Slow Cooker

Slow cookers make preparing a meal on a hot summer day bearable, as long as you're in the mood for something stew-like or pot boiled, but there are also lots of other non-food related uses for slow cookers as well.

Looking for a new hobby? Pick up an old slow cooker at a yard sale or thrift store and use it to make candles, soap or as a heated dye bath container for dyeing fabric.

Love to DIY when it comes to home renovation? That slow cooker can help you strip the paint off metal, air out a room and can even be used as a humidifier.

Just make sure you don't try to cook food in the same slow cooker you've used for these fun projects, unless you like a little toxic chemical flavor in your tuna casserole!

See the Top 10 Things You Can Do With A Slow Cooker That Don't Involve Food at Lifehacker

PREHISTORIC PRINCESSES: StegoSno White & The Seven Velociraptors- Rated E for Extinct

PREHISTORIC PRINCESSES: StegosnoWhite & The Seven Velociraptors by Captain RibMan

When it came time for the big D to reboot their most beloved films they had a choice- take the stories back to the basics or come up with some surprising new take on those fairy stories. They chose the latter because it left them room to make more traditional remakes in the future, but what could they do to their princesses that nobody'd ever seen before? Turn them into dinosaurs, that's what, and thus StegoshoWhite and the Seven Velociraptors was born. The only problem with the project- they couldn't seem to get a G rating because the velociraptors kept eating the cast!

Show the world you're a REALLY old school fan of animated features with this PREHISTORIC PRINCESSES: StegosnoWhite & The Seven Velociraptors t-shirt by Captain RibMan, it's dino-mite!

The Difference Between Aluminum And Aluminium

There's one thing that Americans And Brits have yet to come to an agreement on- the pronunciation of the word aluminum. British spelling is with an extra “i”, which tends to vex Americans.

But is there more to this disagreement besides an extra “i”?

Looking at the root of this debate we see that Brits (and pretty much everyone besides Americans) spell and pronounce the word with an extra “i” because of a precedent set in 1812 by scientific colleagues of Sir Humphrey Davy, the identifier and namer of the metal.

Davy initially called the metal aluminum, but Davy's colleagues felt that aluminium sounded more classical cool so they pushed for the extra “i”, and this totally metal pronunciation debate was born.

This Minion Body Wash Has One Horrifying Flaw

The Minions are drawn, modeled and rendered to be utterly adorable, but the one flaw in their character design is they still look horrifying when they bleed.

'If that blood is flowing out of an orifice the horror level increases, and seeing a Minion bleeding out of its eyes is something that's sure to stay with a child until well after they've started seeing a shrink.

Twitter user @AlsBoy, aka filmmaker and strong swimmer Ash Warner spotted this gruesome flaw in the Minions 3-in-1 Body Wash bottle design while soaping up in the shower, but at least the "blood" is strawberry banana scented!

Superman Toy Soars Over Victoria Park, With A Little Help From A Flying Drone

Since nobody can seem to do Superman justice on the big screen these days director/retoucher/drone pilot Barry Craig has taken it upon himself to shoot the Superman film we need.

Barry attached a Superman action figure to the front of his Phantom 3 flying camera drone and let the Man of Steel fly free over Victoria Park in London.

(YouTube Link)

Now all Barry needs to do is add some supervillain figures, sound effects and CGI eye beams to the footage and he's got the makings of a scene for a new Superman film, or at least a part of a sketch for Robot Chicken.
