The Must Know References In Rick And Morty

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are equal opportunity parodists on their animated series Rick And Morty, and they include a squanchillion references to pop culture into every episode of the show.

Now you could watch and rewatch every episode to catch all the references, but who the hell has time for all that when there are Mr. Meeseeks to boss around and peace among worlds to spread?

So instead of wasting your life watching TV you should waste a little less of your life watching this fun video of Must-Know References by Wisecrack! (NSFW-ish bits)

(YouTube Link)

It reveals the references found in episodes like Something Ricked This Way Comes (fairly obvious references there), Lawnmower Dog (again, pretty obvious reference) and Auto Erotic Assimilation (okay, that one's not as pervy as it sounds...)

The Secrets Of Medieval Castles

(Image Link)

There's a reason many Medieval castles are still standing today, aside from the fact that most were built out of stone- they were constructed by builders who knew their stuff.

These builders didn't waste time with a bunch of decorative elements or other unnecessary additions, so pretty much every detail we see in a castle was put there on purpose.

The moat made it hard for an army on foot or horseback to run up to the castle walls during a siege, but more importantly moats prevented invading armies from tunneling beneath the castle- because their tunnels would flood.

The main gate was also meant to serve as a death trap, as it opened up into a small secured courtyard where the invading army would be trapped and quickly cut down from above by archers.

(Image Link)

But to me the most interesting fact shared by Will Kalif of All Things Medieval has to do with the very logical reason why castle stairwells are so narrow and turn clockwise versus counter-clockwise:

...any attackers coming up the stairs had their sword hands (right hand) against the interior curve of the wall and this made it very difficult for them to swing their swords.

Defenders had their sword hands on the outside wall, which meant they had more room to swing. Another ingenious design of stairs was that they were designed with very uneven steps. Some steps were tall and other steps were short.

The inhabitants, being familiar with the uneven pattern of the stair heights could move quickly up and down the stairs but attackers, in a dimly lit stairwell, would easily fall and get bogged down in the stairwells.

This made them vulnerable to attacks and slowed their attacks down significantly.

Footage Of Cows Happily Playing With Bales Of Hay

Cows are more intelligent and graceful than most people think, but they're also simple creatures who don't mind spending their days standing around in fields munching grass with the rest of their herd.

But just like in human society the herd isn't enough for some cows, and these lone wolves of bovine society are always looking for a chance to slip away from the herd and have a bit of fun on their own.

And while bales of hay look like hard work to most humans the cow in this video shared by Redditor ibru sees it as the perfect cure for bovine boredom.

(YouTube Link)

But as it turns out playing with hay bales isn't just a sport for loners, and sometimes whole herds like to kick up their hooves and get silly with a bale of hay, as shown in this video posted by Jennifer Muzzall of 3 Sisters Beef in Coupeville, Washington.

Who knew frolicking cows would be such a great cure for the blues?

If Pokémon Fans Had Evolutions

For a while there it seemed like everyone wanted to become a Pokémon trainer, but now that Pokémon GO has lost its luster the casual fans have filtered back into normal society.

However, the Pokégeeks play on, many of whom have been Pokémon obsessed since they were kids, and if their fictional creature filled dreams ever come true they'll get to see what it feels like to evolve like a Pokémon.

But since dreams rarely come true these Pokégeeks will just have to settle for a trip down evolution avenue courtesy of this comic strip by Andy Kluthe, it's kinda the same thing, right?

The Craziest Alternate Versions Of Superman

Superman is one of the original comic book superstars, and he set the standard for superheroes to come with both his array of mysterious powers and his strict moral code.

Ironically these crucial character elements caused his storylines to become stagnant, because seeing him win or act like a golden boy for the millionth time just isn't very fun to read.

What is fun to read is the story of young Private Atticus Kent of the Union Army, who discovered he was Superman after being shot with a cannonball, or seeing Kal-El become a force for Communism because he landed in Russia instead of the U.S.

(Image Link)

Superman's family history is another element the writers like to mess with, because a minor tweak can make a major difference to who Kal-El becomes.

Imagine how different Superman's story would have been if his parents hadn't died on Krypton, or on a darker timeline imagine how strange it would be to see Kal-El as Darkseid's adopted son.

It only lasted for one issue before he betrayed Darkseid and became the hero he was meant to be, but still far more interesting to read about than the standard Man of Steel!

Meet Queen Elizabeth's Best Friend Margaret Rhodes

(Image Link)

If someone were to tell you they hang with British Royalty you'd probably roll your eyes and chalk them off as delusional or a teller of tall tales, but Margaret Rhodes doesn't go about bragging.

She is, however, Queen Elizabeth's first cousin and best friend since childhood, and the Hon. Margaret Rhodes still invites the Queen to tea after church every Sunday, so they can talk about matters other than politics.

(YouTube Link)

But if Margaret is asked about political issues she will be quite candid with her opinion, which may be as close as we'll get to hearing the opinion of Queen Elizabeth II herself, since she doesn't do interviews.

Backfire - Bad Breath Kills

Backfire by schwegel

Everybody thinks dragons can just breathe fire at will, and they act like those fiery lizards just go around burning stuff down all day long. But the truth is dragons are quite careful about when they use their fiery breath because they know there's always a chance it will backfire and leave them looking like a lizard flambé. Young dragons usually learn this lesson the hard way, and that's why the Earth isn't overrun by dragons, because their breath backfire acts as a means to ensure only the fittest dragons survive.

Warn the world about the dangers of bad breath with this Backfire t-shirt by Schwegel, it's a fun way to show some love for your favorite fantasy creature and show off your fiery side at the same time!

Back in the days of coin op arcades games like Pac-Man had low bit theme songs designed to lure players to the cabinet from across a noisy arcade, and those silly little songs really got stuck in your head...like for the rest of your life.

Even though I haven't slipped a quarter into a Pac-Man arcade machine for well over a decade I can still bring that classic 8-bit tune to mind whenever I want because I once had a serious case of Pac-Man fever.

And now I've got that feeling once again thanks to Dave Wave's delightful ten different style rendition of the Pac-Man theme song!
