Tablecloth Play House

Are your kids constantly stealing clean laundry and blankets to build tents and forts? Mine are. Etsy seller CoolSpacesForKids must know some kids guilty of doing this too. Check out her beautifully simple and yet sweetly adorable Tablecloth Play House.

Did you just have a "Why Didn't I Think Of That" moment? I know I did when I saw this tablecloth playhouse.  I also wondered how long it took for the kids to knock that bowl of apples off the table.  I hope the bowl is made out of plastic.

State Agency Seeks To Find Doll's Owner

Do you know who this doll belongs to?

This very special Operation Military Kid doll, with a picture of a soldier, showed up at the Cedar Rapids airport last November. The airport tried to find the owner, but the doll remained unclaimed. Now the doll is now being transferred into the custody of the Department of Corrections.

The Department of Corrections in Iowa has decided to adopt a no doll left behind policy, at least in this instance.
Those with the Department of Corrections aren't giving up on finding the doll's owner.

"There's a family out there possibly a young child that's missing this doll and it's very important to that family and to us to try to get it back in the hand of that family," says Fred Scaletta with the Department of Corrections.

Who knew a airport and a state agency could have such a big heart? I am keeping my fingers crossed that this doll finds his way safely back home.

Show and Tell Causes School Evacuation

The next time your preschooler needs a show and tell item for the letter "G" whatever you do don't send him to school with a grenade. Or two grenades. Unless of course you are also trying cover the letters "B" for bomb squad, "P" for police, "F" for fire department, and "E" for evacuation.

A Massachusetts preschooler caused his entire school to be evacuated when he brought 2 grenades for show and tell.
"One of the children came downstairs and he was very excited he had something for show-and-tell. He opened up his backpack and out came two grenades," said co-owner Carole Grenier.

Grenier said at first she thought nothing of the grenades when the boy took them out - that's when several parents walked in whom also happened to be police officers.

"And another parent came down who was a police officer and he said, ‘Oh, no, these can't go to school. You have to call the police,'" said Grenier.

Minutes later the Chicopee police, fire department, state police and a bomb squad were called to 27 Streiber Dr. About 15 children were evacuated from the building while officials investigated.

You Tube Link via Buzzfeed

An unsuspecting Grandmother sets out to read her baby granddaughter a book.  The book is Adam Mansbach's "Go the F*ck to Sleep." Warning: Grandma reads the whole book even though she thinks it is, " a very bad book."  This hilarious clip contains plenty of foul language. You might want to make sure your little ones are fast asleep before you play this video.

104 Weeks and The Counting is Over!

You may have noticed that at about 93 weeks I abandoned this post. Frankly, there had been no real progress on the Mama, Mom, or Mommy front and it was just to painful to continue. OK, not really. I just got really, really busy and the post seemed to be going no where.  I had hit a wall in my efforts.  Clearly my 1,900 plus weeks were no match for her 93 weeks and counting.  But, just as I was getting comfortable being called "Boss Lady" things took a strange turn.

At around 100 weeks the baby called me Mommy and promptly took it back.  The Baby and I were playing a game that I like to call Can You Say. I ask, for example, can you say "cat" and The Baby will respond by saying the word "cat".  I always tried to sneak in the word Mama, Mom, and Mommy.  Without fail, however, The Baby always caught me. She would shake her head, scream or say no, throw something, or just walk away. It really depended on her mood. This time, however, she repeated the word Mommy, stared at me for a moment, put her hands on her face and promptly screamed, "Oh no!"  My husband witnessed The Event and thought it was possibly the funniest thing he had ever seen.

For about a week after The Event she still refused to say Mom, Mamma, or Mommy. Then slowly she started calling me Mom and Mommy. She still refuses to say Mommy if you ask her to say Mommy. She will only say the words on her own terms. I can accept this compromise.  The Baby has a big personality and I think that is just fine.

So, it is with great pleasure that I officially close this post with the news that at 104 Weeks the counting is finally over. The Baby now calls me Mommy (sometimes). Victory is mine!

Star Trek Book of Opposites

Are you tired of all those boring, pedestrian, and antiquated board books for children that you are forced to read over and over again?  Of course you are! That's why creative authors like David Borgenicht are coming up with innovative board books that will keep you, the parent, from going insane.

Behold the Star Trek Book of Opposites from Quirk Books.

Yes, what you are seeing is correct. This is a board book for toddlers filled with hilarious pictures of Star Trek's heroes and aliens.

The book uses classic 1960s-era TV show stills to take you on a voyage into education.

The collection of images here is just a small selection of the wonderful opposites pairing used throughout the book.  The book is actually comprised of two dozen images that also teach concepts like: appear and disappear, furry and scaly, big and little, one and many, and so on and so forth.

Can you think of a more fantastically goofy way to encourage your child to explore new words and convey the concept of opposites? I think not!

Packing A Safe Lunch For Your Preschooler

Today Show Video

Are you packing a safe lunch for your preschooler / kindergartner?  The answer is probably no. A study out of the University of Texas found that 90% of preschoolers home packed lunches reach unsafe temperatures.
Unsafe,  as the researchers defined it, was anything that sat for more than two hours between 39 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. But that doesn't mean kids are actually getting sick.

The Today Show has discussion on the topic and provides several great suggestions  how to pack safer lunches.

South Korea Schools Aim To Do Away With Paper

A few weeks ago we told you that many schools in the US are doing away with cursive writing in favor of keyboarding.  The move sounded bold and progressive, but is it really?

Schools in South Korea are aiming to get rid of paper entirely and institute a completely-digital curriculum model by 2015.
The government has committed to spend $2.4 billion to buy the equipment and digitize all of the material. They intend to roll it out to elementary schools by 2014 and across the entire education system the following year.

Now that move sounds truly cutting edge.

Show and Tell Bag Tutorial

School is right around the corner.  How do you make sure your preschooler or kindergartner always has his/her Show and Tell item for class?  Make a Show and Tell Bag and affix it to their backpack. Brilliant! Seriously, why didn't I think of that.

I admit I have a slight obsession with bags and organizational devices.  I have labeled my illness the, "Everything Needs a House Syndrome."  That said I couldn't help but fall in love with  the show and tell bags.

I plan on making these for my kids, but with a slight alteration.  I am going to put the Show and Tell day of the week on the bag as well. This way I won't forget which day they have Show and Tell.  See how to make this simple bag in Amazing Mae's trinket keepers tutorial.

Rock Band Camp

Does your kid dream of becoming a rock star?  Now you can send him to rock band camp and make that dream a reality, at least for the summer.

Some very lucky kids in Michigan are spending their summer vacation learning the ins and outs of being in a rock band.
The rock band camp, at St. Cecilia Music Society allows students to learn about all aspects of being in a band, for example forming and promoting the group and of course performing on stage.

The camp even holds concerts where the newly formed rock bands can show off their mad skills.

Hospice For Children Opens In Maryland

A hospice for children, said to be the first of its kind in the country, has opened in Baltimore, Maryland.   Dr. Bob's Place was founded on the belief that terminally ill children should have a warm, caring, and loving place to die.

Dr. Bob's Place  is  special, because it is specifically tailored to meet the needs of children and their families.
“What’s so unique about them [children] compared to adults is that they don’t want to be in bed.  They want to be in the playroom; they want to watch a movie; they want to sit and have popcorn with Mom and Dad and what we have to do is help them get comfortable enough and provide enough supportive care so they can do those things,” Will said.
