Armed Gang Steals Shipment Worth $15M At An Airport

Seven armed men entered the cargo area of Santiago Airport in Chile, and stole a cash shipment worth $15M. The cash shipment was from abroad, and was scheduled to be taken to banks in Chile. Police are now looking for them and suspect that the group had “inside information”, as BBC detailed:

They used two vehicles, one painted in the colours and with the logo of courier company DHL.
An airport security guard was injured after receiving a blow to the head.
One of the vans used in the robbery was later found abandoned and partially burnt. Police said it did not belong to the courier company DHL but had been painted to look like it did.

Google Can Customize Its Recommendations If You Tell It Your Dietary Preferences

You can actually filter out what recommendations you’d like to receive from Google Maps. If you tell Google Maps what kind of food you like, it can customize its recommendations based on your preferences. While you can still get recommendations that may not be to your liking, but overall you can still get suggestions that fit your preferences. Lifehacker has more details:

To customize yours, launch Google Maps and then tap on your profile icon. From there, select Settings followed by “Exploring places” and then “Food & drink preferences.” From there you’ll be able to add different types of dietary preferences as well as let Maps know if there’s a particular type of cuisine you’re interested in.
For instance, you can tell Google Maps that you’re Gluten-free or a vegan. You can also say you’re interested in things like Australian food or Bubble tea, or less interested in chain restaurants like Chili’s or Applebees.

Would You Watch Flat Earthers Search For The Edge Of The World On TV?

We’ve seen how flat Earthers proclaim their beliefs to other people. While the earth has been scientifically proven to be an oblate spheroid, some people refuse to believe this, claiming that the Earth is flat. From using Bible scriptures to believing that gravity is not real, their beliefs are creative, at best. TruthTheory has a good suggestion on how we can put the flat earthers’ creativity into good use:

a Reddit user has got the perfect answer: why not make a reality show out of them? Think about the Amazing Race – wasn’t that really great? Now, just replace it with flat-earthers and give them the objective – find the edge of this world. Of course, they are not going to find it, but it would be amazing to watch them try and get to it. They will go to different exotic locations, mingle with people, and have local food. There will be a candid view of how they think and tie different concepts to strengthen their beliefs. They would probably measure the sun angles, try to find out the changes in the sun’s position just like the scientists of yesteryear tried to do. Maybe in due course, they will finally come to understand the falsity of their beliefs and debunk their own theory! At least, that would be something great to watch, as well as a relief.

5,000 Year Old Sword

Dr. Vittoria Dall ’Armellina, of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice found a sword amongst a collection of objects in a monastery. Dall ’Armellina found a 5,000 year old Anatolian sword in the Mekhitarist Monastery. However, the sword was incorrectly identified as medieval, and was studied by Dall’Armellina and Elena Rova. A new, more scientific study has determined the rare sword to have been forged around 3000 BC, as Ancient Origins detailed:

Dall’Armellina’s suspicions have now been supported by a new scientific study which has dated the sword to having been forged “around 3000 BC,” making it incredibly rare and one of the oldest swords in the world. And the only reason this newly discovered sword is being called “one of” the oldest swords in the world is because an extremely similar weapon dating to 3000 BC is kept by the Tokat Museum in Turkey that was discovered in the Sivas Province at the eastern part of the Central Anatolia region of Turkey.
The weapon was found to be made of a copper and tin alloy frequently used in Anatolia before the Bronze Age and the specialists have dated the sword to between the end of the 6th and start of the 3rd millennium BC.

Dentist Designs A Horror Game In MS Paint

Polish dentist Pawel Kozminski has another life besides helping people with their tooth problems. His other life is spent on coding his passion project, World of Horror. World of Horror is a retro throwback RPG inspired by the works of Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft. Instead of using custom animation software for the game, he used MS Paint to build the game’s world. Gizmodo has the details:

The game is set in a small seaside Japanese town just as the “Old Gods are reawakening, clawing their way back into a world that’s spiraling into madness.” It features a series of branching stories helmed by five playable characters, and gameplay involves turn-based combat and “unravel[ing] puzzles and mysteries through spells that sacrifice sanity.”
Usually, game developers save themselves the horror of creating complex works in such a dated program by using custom animation software. Not Kozminski, who told Engadget that he specifically chose MS Paint for its limitations. “Creating art in Paint is actually really inspiring and somehow relaxing. The limits of the program really force you to get creative with it, which is a huge thing. I guess 1-bit black-and-white art is the closest I can get to simulate that comic book feel, too.”

Coffee Alarm Clock

The best way to wake up in the morning is with a cup of coffee. That means that we have to muster our strength to part ways with the comfort of our beds, and make coffee. Josh Renouf created an alarm clock that won’t force you to stand up and make coffee, it will force you to wake up and drink the morning coffee made by your alarm. The Barisieur is a retro-looking alarm clock that simultaneously brews a fresh cup of steaming coffee while waking you up!

World’s First Cephalopod Atlas

Carl Chun led a deep-sea expedition in 1898 that led to findings that contradicted the belief that life could not exist below 300 fathoms. The German marine biologist along with his team emerged from the expedition with writings and proof of creatures that were strange and otherworldly during his time. After his expedition, he showcased his findings through the 1910 treasure Cephalopod Atlas. The atlas showed vivid illustrations by Friedrich Wilhelm Winter, as Brain Pickings detailed:

Among Winter’s stunning, sensual illustrations — which I have restored and made available as prints, benefiting Greenpeace and their inspired endeavor to protect the increasingly human-savaged habitats of these living wonders — is one of a creature Chun was the first to describe: a small, black cephalopod with branchial hearts and a light gonad that appears to shine just above its stomach. He named it Vampyroteuthis infernalis, “vampire squid from hell.”

How Long Should You Wash Your Hands?

The spread of Coronavirus has caused a spread of misinformation as to how people can avoid catching the contagious disease. Health officials have maintained that the best way to avoid the virus is by washing your hands. CDC says that you should lather soap on your hands for at least 20 seconds. You can try singing “Happy Birthday” twice, but CNN has listed a few recommended songs that you can sing along, from Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” to Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”.

Nope, Vodka Cannot Be Used As A Hand Sanitizer

Austin-based Vodka maker Tito’s Vodka has clarified on social media that their vodka cannot be used as hand sanitizer. Even if it’s handmade. Even if alcoholic beverages have alcohol, it doesn’t really sanitize! While it would be good for the company if people would keep buying their alcohol, the company had to set things straight, as Eater detailed:

The confusion arises amid a shortage of hand sanitizer as concerned members of the public attempt to protect against the spread of the novel coronavirus. That lack of supply has led to price gouging for hand sanitizer online: a box of small Purell bottles that might sell for $10 typically are now listed for hundreds from secondary sellers on Amazon. It’s also led to DIY advice and online recipes for homemade hand sanitizers, most of which call for rubbing alcohol (99 percent alcohol by volume) plus aloe vera gel.
Tito’s, meanwhile, is actually just 40 percent alcohol by volume, not the 60 percent required to kill viruses. As Dallas Morning News reporter Dom DiFurio noted, the company will probably have to keep Tweeting ad nauseam while people on Twitter threaten to “get me a handle of @TitosVodka and make some hand sanitizer for my family.”
“Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol by volume,” Tito’s writes soberly in reply after reply, attaching an explanation for added clarity.

Did BMW Screw Up With Its Logo Redesign?

BMW has revealed its new logo, updating it for the first time in two decades. The company has deviated from the heavily outlined to a more transparent logo, and some people found that change weird. The new logo doesn’t really look that bad, but if spray painted on specific colors, it might not be legible, as Jalopnik detailed:

While I don’t think it necessarily looks bad, legibility does suffer, and it all feels a bit busier than it needs to be. Even if BMW is walking back its use on actual, physical badges, I’m still not convinced it’s the solution the company needs. Having one logo for “brand communication” and another for badges feels like somebody just didn’t get the basic logo right.

OK, so back to designing. I think the flatness works, but the transparent, bordered ring and lettering doesn’t, especially without the unifying black ring. Luckily, the solution is simple and obvious: Lose the letters.
