When I stayed in a lovely hotel in Covent Garden there was a little hole in the wall diner we would walk to in the mornings for breakfast. They had this huge machine - sort of like an extra large espresso machine - that steam scalded your tea. No boiling water or tea bag in sight anywhere. They were the best cups of tea I have ever had in my life.
If you go to Loch Ness avoid the eastern end. It's all built up and there's an annoying boat that goes back and forth all day long 'looking for Nessie'. Go to the mid and western end and you'll find it undeveloped and lonely looking and utterly lovely. The water looks like a storm cloud, all deep dark purple but get in the water and it's crystal clear and as cold as Lake Superior. That's very cold!

I saw that movie "Jason and the Argonauts" at the drive-in when I was a kid and that skeleton fight scared me silly. Them popping up out of the ground from Hydra teeth was bad enough but when they just kept coming and coming... panic time!

I love Ray's movies and that clip of bits of his movies make me want to have a Harryhausen movie weekend!

I have an enormous stuffed frog playing the harp and a small frog with a sombrero, serape and playing a cello. Have had them for years but haven't found any more of them. bummer

Okay, you had me at 'scratch homemade whipped cream' and 'scratch hot fudge'. Making recipes from scratch are truly worth your time and the smiles your family and friends give you make it all worthwhile.

So it's okay for a woman to pay, as long as no one sees her. Gotta protect the man's dignity, after all."

It was more than that. Women dining alone were considered to be prostitutes and were often turned away from restaurants. (Two or more women at a table was tolerated.) A man and woman could also have the woman's virtue brought into question back then with money changing hands in public places decades ago. In order not to cast suspicion on either party's integrity, a woman paying the bill was done in a round about way.

The man's 'dignity' was a lesser consideration but still a valid observation.

My son married a lovely lady in Chengdu 3 years ago and they have a little girl - 1 1/2 yrs old. My son, who is white, is 6'2" and the folks in China gawk, literally gawk, at him. They call him "Hung gai" which isn't a very nice term for 'white man'. He has gotten used to it. His daughter has reddish hair and caucasian features so everyone knows who she is in the neighborhood and they are very nice to her. good to know...
